Overdressed and status symbols

This is possibly the shallowest thread have ever read. What is missing for you folks so concerned with what to wear and keeping up with wealthy “Joneses”? This is an education thread for God sake. The world has so many problems and people who don’t eat or have shelter. Please try to use your money to do some good for others. Also, the jewelry shown here is really unattractive to some of us.

Wait should I be unconcerned with what I wear… or worried you find my jewelry unattractive? LOL!

I would feel like an idiot wearing a 10k bracelet.

Why do you care so much about what others think? If you want it where it. I have some confidence for goodness sake.

I guess for the uber wealthy this isn't so "showy." Its projecting that VCA alhambra necklaces, carrier bracelets, celine bags etc. are just "everyday wear," which is true for many that can afford 50k tuition.

Oh come on. This is a private school forum. If you truly believed that why are you paying so much for tuition?

The posts in this thread seem to struggle with the definition of "showy". I agree with PP that everyday style standards are going to vary by wealth and personal taste. There is a line, however, that defines appropriateness by function. Wearing stilettos when chaperoning a DC field trip of first graders would be a puzzling choice, for example. I have observed more puzzling choices over the past several months than pre-pandemic. Maybe people are just so bored with practical and comfortable?

I don't really care what others wear, and hadn't really thought about it until I saw this thread, but it is a mildly interesting trend.

It's just the trends of the day, nothing to get your panties in a bunch about.

UMC? I agree it's basic as can be but it's a $100K+ investment.

Golden goose sneakers $500
Goyard bag $1200
Cartier love bracelets (multiple metals, diamond one for 10 year anniversary) $7K each plus $17K for the diamond one: let's say $38K for the stack of 4 that everyone wears
Stations necklace $35K to $65K
Stupid GG belt $500
Expensive highlights $500 x 4/year $2K

It is not that much compared with private school tuitions.

I'm European and so baffled by this response. Why? Protestant guilt?

It’s about looking tasteful and like you have class- not looking like a WASP. Gobs of makeup and big hair and seductive clothing can be unattractive to others and appear to be distasteful. That’s what OP is talking about I believe.

OP said nothing about gobs of makeup or big hair. She said they’re wearing tons of expensive jewelry and labels. Which is against WASP code and offensive to OP. They like what they have on and if OP is comfortable with what she has on then live and let live.

No but the few I think of that stand out in a negative way have tons of makeup and big hair and wear very flashy clothing so yes they do look silly to me and to others. The expensive jewelry and clothing is nothing new to me but where I am from everyone has expensive jewelry but no one wears name tags or any items with the brand or logo showing. You know it is expensive because you have seen it yourself. Couture suits and dresses but no name tags. They don’t wear trendy jewelry that all would know. They may purchase diamond studs from Tiffany’s but it does not have Tiffany’s splashed across them. So expensive clothing but very fashionable and classic looking. Not looking like they just invaded the kardashians closet.

Why all the hate for Cartier and Van Cleef? Yes, they’re a bit over-saturated right now, but these are both established jewelry houses with beautiful craftsmanship. Grace Kelly and Kate Middleton wear Van Cleef alhambra, so I would think DCUMers would be all over these.

Odd. Would you feel like an idiot wearing a $10 bracelet? If you liked it? Or do you just think others should feel like idiots for wearing something they like? Odd.

I'm an American and am equally baffled. {shrug} It's a strange position to take. If someone has that extent of disposable funds and is fond of jewelry, I can't find any cause to "feel like an idiot". I fully understand it not being your thing, but feeling like an idiot???
