During the pandemic, our W school brought in a bunch of portables. I guess because of the projected enrollment. They have sat empty for two years.

W's get all the resources.

You do realize that Title 1 and Focus schools receive way more funds (fed, state and county) than other schools, including the Ws? PTA and booster clubs at the Ws may have more funds, and that is privately funded by parents, not tax dollars.

Not according to this:

The official Montgomery County Public Schools enrollment for September 30, 2021, is 158,232 students. This number is 6,518 students less than the projected enrollment of 164,750, and 2,332 less than last year's enrollment of 160,564 students.

See, that's the problem when you lie - you get caught!

But this doesn't show declining enrollment It just shows a shortfall in a projection. Seems like you're the one trying to twist the truth here.

Yes they're lying. A dozen years ago the school had around 144,000 students their own numbers show it currently has around 158,000. That is growth in my book.

Then it went up to 165,267 students, then by Sept. 7, 2020 dropped to 162,656

Then by fall 2020 dropped to 160,564 Students (Official Fall 2020)

Yeah. Another lie. You should have known better to just shut up. Keep burying yourself.

Don't let covid get in the way of a good wealth story!

Most of that comes from the feds. Locally W's are given special treatment. Even their boundaries are gerrymandered to eliminate more challenging students that they heap on everyone else.

Its not way more but they do get funding in K-3rd, some 4/5th to reduce class sizes because of the needs of the students. Come 4-5th and MS it all evens out and the W schools do get more in terms of enrichment and other things as the PTA's and booster clubs pay for it.

Blair, Blair, Blair. All MCPS cares about and caters to is Silver Spring. Why? Because Montgomery County allows anyone to vote for anyone else's BOE District rep. And where are the greatest number of voters located? Silver Spring.

Here's the funny part. The ONLY reason why Blair is so overcrowded is because MCPS forced the Magnet to be there. If they moved the magnet mid-or-upper county, overcrowding wouldn't be an issue.

MCPS leadership is soooooo corrupt I want to barf!!!

It would be nice if they moved the magnet program to a more accessible school but all the HS in the consortium are overcrowded.

You do realize each portable costs about $80,000 plus the cost of installation? And you do realize that portables have a history of growing mold that affects the health of teachers and students?

Such a waste. The money would have been better used fixing the HVAC in the school.

The HVAC has nothing to do with portables. The portables are about space and $80K isn't bad for the price.

Anonymous wrote:Because as the parent of a young special needs child we are not only exhausted all the time, we have spent nearly every penny and then some on private services to help our child. There is nothing left to give, not the time, energy or money.

Not to mention many special Ed students end up as single family households. Not all, so please don't jump down my throat. But the reality is, if you have money, you go private and get what your child needs. And if you don't have money, many of cannot add even one more thing to our plate. So we get what we get and try not to get to upset

Private schools require parents to pay for private evaluation and plenty of private services(tutoring, OG, specialists, etc.). Private school can be helpful because of the smaller size so there may be time & flexibility to focus on a student more individually. But, please understand they not change their class setup, curriculums, or go above the services they already have in place. They expect parents to pay privately for those extra needs/services. And if you don’t and your kid continues to struggle and its obvious they need more, you will kindly be counseled out.

I don't know anything about this but the PP statement rang true. I know quite a few families whose kids have IEP/504 issues and never heard one complain so can't help but wonder if this is just another MCPS hater spreading their misery.

If you don’t know anything then what exactly rang true? Attend an IEP meeting then you might comprehend what PPs are describing. It’s a corrupt school system that uses unethical practices to deny students accommodations and services that students need to learn.

MCPS has lost the concept that a public school system should be about educating students.

What rings true is every parent I've spoken with who has kids with 504 or IEP plans has never once complained in fact they seem completely satisfied with how the county is handling it which leads me to believe that this is a bunch of nonsense cooked up by the usual people who just like to complain about everything without providing a shred of proof.

I think they were talking about the people that WERE NOT accepted into the program, such as the families that COULD NOT afford lawyers, an independent neuro psych eval, an advocate.

That poster probably lives in a rich area where those families bring in advocates from the start. Some us don't have that luxury and if it comes down to it, we know our kids need help now so I'd rather take that 5-10K I'd spend on an advocate to get my child help. I pulled my child out of school every day early or in the middle of the day in the early years for private therapies. That is probably one reason why the school denied us as they knew we'd do what it took for our child and make it work. That also meant I couldn't work to do that so factor in my loss of income as I couldn't afford a nanny.

$80,000 times five portables is a lot to spend for space not being used. More teachers would have served a greater need.

Are they getting the basket weaving in bird watching magnets? That should be super convenient for people and that part of the county.

At some point there was a clear need. Given they have separate HVAC's I'd rather my kids be in portables as long as they had bathrooms.

MCPS is wasting over $80K a unit that isn't even in use? I hope that's reported to the Maryland IG.

A public school teaches all children, regardless of location. Placing magnets at Poolesville and Silver Spring alienates a large segment of the county population.

If you work for MCPS, I sooooo hope you're fired! You're exactly the type of corrupt person that gives the school system a bad name.
