Another snow day

No its the parents who both work and dont get leave.

Agreed. It seems like the casualness of it all ...similar to increase in frequency of religious holidays/teacher's planning days that don't consider the difficulties of parents. In a pinch, Middle School kids can be by themselves but for elementary school kids, these days off are stressful and extremely inconvenient. A rare day here or there is understandable, but a whole week is nuts.
In addition, many parents come from regions in which snow and ice are commonplace and have a hard time understanding why this is so novel.

This ain’t new. I sacrificed income so that I could have a job that allowed me enough flexibility to have my kids. If you can’t handle a little snow day without freaking out then you might need another job. There will be weather cancellations. It’s part of raising children.

Talk to the Department of Transportation, I guess. I don’t think it snows enough here to really merit the kind of equipment you have wherever you’re from. Welcome to DC!

Yes, talk to the federal Department of Transportation about snow removal in Arlington. That will get to the bottom of this.

This is why kids need to be in school.

Excuse me. The Virginia Department of Transportation, then. You do understand that there are state level departments of transportation, right?

VDOT doesn't handle majority of roads in Arlington. That is why Arlington's roads are cleared better than Fairfax.

I call 2-hour delay b/c of snow timing and warm ground. once down, it will all melt.

if closures for 6 inches of snow is so triggering for you, suggest you move either to the north where they can handle it or to the south where they don't get any snow.

it's very normal for this region to close for 6 inches, and often for far less than that.

snow days, teacher work days are a normal part of school. the parents who freak out about them act like they are something totally unexpected. make a plan ahead of time for child care coverage and you will be much less stressed

What is so hard to understand? I too come from a region where snow and ice is common. Up there, it's much more common. Governments have the equipment to deal with it - to plow, sand, salt. People also make arrangements, such as owning snow blowers or hiring private plows for their own property. And they know how to drive in it and put snow tires on their cars.

All of that makes a huge difference in opening and getting around safely.

I guess we could do all of that but most people don't find it worthwhile because we don't get that much snow and all of this costs money. Maybe not a coincidenced that taxes tend to be higher in the northern states that can handle their snow?

Do you want to pay higher taxes pp so we have fewer snow days? Taht's the tradeoff, if so, go lobby for that.

They don’t. That’s not what it is called. So yes I do know.

My prediction: 2 hour delay called tonight with possibility that becomes a closure in the morning once it’s clear what’s going on.
