In a pinch, Middle School kids can be by themselves but for elementary school kids, these days off are stressful and extremely inconvenient. A rare day here or there is understandable, but a whole week is nuts.
In addition, many parents come from regions in which snow and ice are commonplace and have a hard time understanding why this is so novel.

Talk to the Department of Transportation, I guess. I don’t think it snows enough here to really merit the kind of equipment you have wherever you’re from. Welcome to DC!

Yes, talk to the federal Department of Transportation about snow removal in Arlington. That will get to the bottom of this.

This is why kids need to be in school.

Excuse me. The Virginia Department of Transportation, then. You do understand that there are state level departments of transportation, right?

VDOT doesn't handle majority of roads in Arlington. That is why Arlington's roads are cleared better than Fairfax.

not the PP but you do know that Arlington has its own dept of transportation too right?

They don’t. That’s not what it is called. So yes I do know.

excuuuuse me, DES

That's nice for you that you don't need your income, not many of us have that privilege.

It's one thing to plan for school closures in the calendar, another that won't be announced until 6pm the day before.

This is likely. They know SOMETHING will fall overnight but not how much, so a delay is a safe call. If it doesn’t accumulate we just go in late. If it does accumulate, they can change to a cancel by 5 am.

You know there will be snow days. You know your kids will get sick. You need to plan ahead for these things as a parent.

I didn’t say that I don’t need my income. I’m saying that I could be making moire, but there are some things I had to sacrifice to have a job that enables me to raise children.

Im already using lots of PTO for sick days, if they could plan better I could make arrangements. Last minute is the problem and a loose policy

I wish they would do that but my prediction is they just close the whole day tonight.

If you are able to pay the mortgage and live in Arlington, you don’t need the income.

That would be shocking they didn’t already close for the full week.

Fairfax called 2 hour delay. No way in hell we are closed if they are not.

Could change overnight though.

I respect they’re going to try.
