12/13 year old girls arrested for stomping man to death in DC last fall

Under DC Code can only be held until 21, unfortunately. Same age girls killed the Uber Eats driver. One got held until 21, other got home confinement. Killing with bare hands and feet used to be a crime not committed by girls. Utterly horrifying.

Neighborhood knows who the man in the blue jacket is, likely are afraid of him.

Has their gang been named? Not enforcing truancy laws leaves kids at the mercy of very dangerous and violent people. Was this an initiation kill? Or just a thrill kill?

Heartbreaking for the poor elderly disabled man and his loved ones.

It should be 21 if they complete requirements such as counseling, education and job training and then sit before a panel that certifies them competent for society. Otherwise, stay in until they make those gains.

The parents absolutely should be arrested and charged. What they did was barbarian - and under care of their parents.

Has the gang they are in been named?

Cold comfort - it won’t take very long them to be back in jail after they are released.

That is how it works, yes.

DC Code does not allow for the latter.

To me, that means DC Code needs a thoughtful update.

a quibble but I wish media (and therefore the public) would pick a different word than "young girls" or even "girls" when recounting stories like these.

I wish instead media would talk like matter of fact law enforcement public info officers and say "the two females were seen on video .... one female ran from the scene, the other was apprehended at the site ...

or better yet, "the SUSPECTS will appear in court on Monday."

Words matter. I think the very consistent use of "girls"-- or worse, "children" -- is intentional and designed to trigger sympathy and encourage readership to mentally absolve the suspects of culpability.

Maybe we could ask the media to just call them animals? Would that feel better to you?

Jesus, yes, 12 and 13 year olds are children. Even when they do horrifying things.

Hm. What would make me feel better is if the District would permit minors to be tried and sentenced as adults for 1st degree homicide, as is the case in other jurisdictions.

I'd feel much better if these little itty bitty children were incarcerated for 20+ years if they are convicted of repeatedly stomping an elderly man's skull so hard that his brains leaked out the back of his head onto the pavement. That would feel pretty good to me, since you asked.

Any update that gets harder on criminals will be controversial because it will disproporitionately affect POCs.

The youngest girl was arrested Friday after being shot IN HER OWN HOME. Gives you a sense for the types of environments these children were raised in.

But their frontal lobes weren’t fully-developed. How could they possibly have known better?

The murders that criminals commit also disproportionately affect POCs.

The violence in that area of NW is nuts. Even in early evening.
