Private & Independent Schools
| An excellent choice if a sex change is in OP's son's future. |
| Georgetown Prep if athletics are a long term interest for you and your family. I know a lot of graduates and they are the well-rounded athletic types. |
I am from DC, and yes it is sketchy. Still a great school but you will want to check it out. |
You may be from DC, but when was the last time you lived and/or interacted in DC. Gonzaga is downtown/union station area. Pleeze, you ran to the burbs, now stay in the burbs. |
Hey, suburb-hat in' real estate expert, I still work and live in DC. The crime figures for the area in which Gonzaga is in are higher than those for the areas in which other DC privates such as Maret, Sidwell, GDS, Or STA are located. I don't say it disqualifies Gonzaga but it is a factor for some, and if you talked to Gonzaga's admissions people they would say the same (eg they lose students to Prep). They also obviously don't have the field space of some other schools. Again, great place, poster should check it out and talk to some parents (who hopefully won't insult her if she lives outside DC). |
NP here. Last time I went to a game at Gonzaga someone had their car broken into. It wouldn't stop me from sending a boy there if it were otherwise a good choice but it is a valid thing for families to look at. |
| St. Albans would be my top pick for top academics, strong character development, and a healthy sports requirement. |

Washington Episcopal School. My 99.5% (which I agree is somewhat meaningless in DC) son is thriving academically there, but what we really love is how kind the children are to each other. There is a values/moral component of the curriculum that has meant more than just words to our boy.
As for sports, there are 3 gyms, climbing wall, and one playing field for now. The school has just sold some land in order to develop its property, and I hear that additional playing fields will be a part of the new development. The kids do cross country runs on the Capital Crescent Trail which crosses right in front of the school. Especially given your location, you should take a look! |
Wow, my car was broken into while parked on a side street off Connecticut Avenue, while I was in the Avalon theatre for a kid's program. Go figure! I think they call that area Chevy Chase. |

People shouldn't make light of the Gonzaga crime ridden area. This year, there was a big story in the WP about Gonzaga boys being robbed on their way to the metro. It happens every single year. For people who don't think Gonzaga is in a crime area -- they must not have ever been there.
This isn't coming from some "burb" mom as I am sure someone will be quick to assume. Rather, I've always lived in a city wherever I have lived. I have NEVER lived in a suburb. So, I have 'situational awareness' in any neighborhood I go to because even my beloved Georgetown has had a lot of crime lately. |
this is an all girls school except for K |
| Re: Gonzaga vs. Prep. All things being equal, a college will take the Gonzaga kid over the one from Prep. |
All things being equal, what is the factor that would make a college take a Gonzaga kid over a Prep kid? Please tell. |
I get the sense that OP is looking for a high school, and WES only goes through 8th grade. |
| St. Anselm's. I can't wait until my son is in 6th grade. |
