1)We should have not expanded NATO membership once the USSR collapsed.
2) I would have said we are not expanding NATO to your door steps.

Yes and when Putin says he wants Germany…give him Germany…when he wants the US to pay him half the US GDP…we do it because …you know he is a nuclear power.

The US is a nuclear power also and Putin has free license to tell us what to do? Maybe in MAGA world.

In the end of the day they know that it's an unwinnable war and they'd only be signing their own death warrant. That's the point of mutually assured destruction ladies and gentlemen. Russia has 5977 nukes in their stockpile of which 1588 are operational (I bet it's actually lower given their recent performance) against our 5428 stockpile of which 1644 are operational. When you add in NATO our total stockpile goes to 6300. Putin's posturing is just to scare us away from supporting Ukraine because he's getting his butt-handed to him by what was the 24th ranked military in 2021. He's Bluffing!

As far as NATO expansion is concerned the only places that don't seem to get invaded are NATO members. I think it'll be easier to argue that have we made Ukraine and NATO member this recent assault would not have happened. However that would have been difficult given the timing of everything that happened back in 2014. Also when you say NATO expanded it's not as no NATO forces Nations to join these nations apply because they want the protection that the alliance provides. That's why Finland and Sweden right now look around and say hey I guess we better join. I think the real lesson for the world in all this is if you continually back down from bullies they will keep coming.

Further, given the atrocities occurring in Ukraine at the hands of the Russians I'm really surprised that anyone really believes we shouldn't at least support Ukraine by providing military aid.

Also realize that China is sitting back observing this deciding how they will approach Taiwan I promise you if we back down they're going for it.
Honestly I can't tell if OP is just pro Russian or really has their head in the clouds. Either way it doesn't matter.

I am not pro Russia and very sad what happened in Ukraine but at the same time I know bad wars happen all the time.
Putin had a distractive war in Chechnya and Syria. Ours was in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya with bad results.
Saudi Arabia is demolishing Yemen as with speak.
My point is there is a big risk for miscalculation and mistakes.

This says all one needs to know about you.

Americans are almost incapable of realizing other countries have interests similar to their own and act in similarly predictable ways.

What do you think would happen if China decided to install missile silos/garrison an army/etc etc in Mexico with the full cooperation of their government? Actually, think is the wrong word. What do you KNOW would happen?

Now look at Ukraine and Russia and see if you can put two and two together and work out how this entire situation could have easily been avoided.

NATO does not deploy any nuclear weapons in eastern Europe. Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons in a gesture of peace. On the other hand, Russia keeps missile silos /garrison and a massive army right across the border from the Baltics and Ukraine.

Why are Russians incapable of understanding that other countries have interests similar to their own?

The Russian invasion of Ukraine confirms that the NATO self-defense pact is needed to oppose Russian aggression.

Let's not create a policy based on metaphors.

"The Elders tell of a young ball much like you. He bounced three meters in the air. Then he bounced 1.8 meters in the air. Then he bounced four meters in the air. Do I make myself clear?"

What are we supposed to do? Encourage the Ukrainians to surrender? They aren't members of NATO and can do what they want.

The US already waited to send weapons, and sent them out after they were already pushing the Russians back. So what if Putin threatens nuclear war? Russia can't even take over one little country, and then they are resorting to killing and raping civilians.

It's obvious we can take our chances with Putin. He's apparently forgotten that a lot of people coming into power right now (ages 40-60) assumed that a nuclear war was going to happen no matter what.

We should arm the Ukrainians with nuclear weapons. This is the only guarantee of freedom for Ukraine.

No. Russia won't nuke any NATO countries. And if Russia used a nuke in Ukraine, NATO would run away as fast as possible. The truth is Putin could level Ukraine and we'd do nothing to respond other than sanctions and the like. That's the reality of being a nuclear power, and why we don't want terrorist states like Iran to have them.

That is a stupid analogy. China is an authoritarian regime. If a western democratic country had an alliance with mexico is the proper analogy.

i agree with you that Americans dont understand that other countries may have the interest (if they had the strenght), to act like the US. but in this case, Ukraine was not in Nato, was nowhere near being admitted to into Nato, there was no threat whatsoever of missiles being installed in Ukraine any time soon. Russia started a violenti invasion of the entire country with carpet bombing of cities, civilian targets, widepsread massacres of civilians and so on. this is not because of Nato, is because Ukraine was getting closer to be a successful western democracy.

as a result, Russia will have a long border with a Nato country, Finland. let's see how that works. Finland has an arny, is in the EU so an attack to Finland would be an attack to the EU, which has many countries in Nato.

Why would this administration let this get out? This is just dumb. Some things are better left as classified and not to be published.

That is an example of sleepwalking OP is taking about.
