Do our politicians know about Russia's military doctrine about use of nuclear weapons?
It has very low threshold.
This is more dangers than during Cuban missile crisis.

Nah. It's not. If Russia nukes then they get nuked. Mutually assured destruction.

Russia invaded Ukraine in a war of territorial expansion (and is doing horribly). Russia has committed mass crimes and atrocities on a level comparable to Milosevic and Taylor. Their goal is the complete destuction of the concept of Ukraine. If they want it to stop they can stop it.

Lets assume they use small tactical nuclear weapon against Ukraine, then what will we do?

Then Russia will have declared a war of agression against the world and a medium sized nuke is used on a comparable site in Russia.

Russia has agency. You don't seem to understand what country is the protagonist in this story.

If we do what you suggested,
We won’t be here to discuss about it.

If we dont then we won't be here to discuss about it (sic)

If we do as you suggest, that would be unilateral unconditional global surrender. Once a nuke is fired in anger (petulance) it's all over anyway. If there is no response then there is no detterent. If you are really scared about this scenario then you need to be praying every night that Russia loses and working to ensure that the entire world stands together opposed to their unprovoked aggressive war of conquest and genocide.

It would be utter insanity to nuke Russia because they used a tactical nuke on Ukraine. Should the US nuke Pakistan if Pakistan nukes India? Should we nuke Israel if they nuke Iran? There is no treaty that requires us to come to the defense of Ukraine, and starting armageddon over a low yield tac nuke is ridiculous. If Russia uses nukes on Ukraine all it will do is further unite the world against Russia and make it that much harder for "neutral" countries like India/China to justify their continued business with them.

Incorrect.

We have the capability for a nuclear decapitation strike on Russia. Doing so would be an act of self-preservation, not insanity.

You don’t know about the Russian dead man’s switch

Are you referring to the nuke hidden in the attic of the Russian embassy in DC?

No, the Russians have a system to detect nuclear detonations in Russian territory and automatically issue launch commands to all of its nuclear missile units. So a decapitation strike would fail to destroy their ability to retaliate.

Could Russia send nukes to US -- yes -- at least a few. That's all you need. But the idea that Russia has its old Soviet capacity or that anything really works is utter nonsense. The US will never use nukes first. But the US will use them second.

After observing the war in Ukraine, I no longer believe this is true.
I believe they have things that look like what a nuclear warhead/bomb would look like but I think it’s like those picture we get of schools and factories in N Korea. The right stuff is on display but who knows what’s underneath.
They probably made a few real bombs a long time ago but they no longer have the knowledge capacity - either bc the people have died or they have simply moved elsewhere and made sure they left no trail

So maybe Russia can launch a middle and maybe they get lucky and it lands near Alaska but maybe not. And if it does I imagine it landed, not exploding, and people in the remote area it hits starts tweeting pictures of it

Let's not create a policy based on metaphors.

"The Elders tell of a young ball much like you. He bounced three meters in the air. Then he bounced 1.8 meters in the air. Then he bounced four meters in the air. Do I make myself clear?"

Rubber band metaphor was said about NATO expansion .

So if NATO expands, it will snap back?

The reaction to NATO expansion is Putin snapping back.

So the rubberband is both NATO and Putin? You do realize your interpretation makes no sense.

Russia = Rubber band.
NATO = Stretcher of the rubber band (Russia).
Snap back = Rubber band (Russia)

When the rubberband snaps back, it injures the holder. Who is holding the rubberband, NATO? Russia? Putin? Is the rubberband around NATO? That's backwards, because NATO surrounds Russia.

What a perfect metaphor for Russia's own incompetent hubric agression. They invaded Ukraine and in doing so snapped themselves with the rubber band.

It's certainly an odd metaphor because it doesn't make any sense in the context it was uttered. Then again, I still don't think we should base foreign policy on vague and misleading metaphors from despots.

FWIW at this point I think everyone understands that the U.S. is giving Ukraine literally everything except American soldiers. For some reason no one raised a fuss about weapons transfers but somehow intelligence is beyond the pale. What’s the difference?

From the piece: (it's not the fact that intelligence is being provided - it is the fact that our people are boasting about it)

Vladimir Putin surely has no illusions about how much the U.S. and NATO are arming Ukraine with material and intelligence, but when American officials start to brag in public about playing a role in killing Russian generals and sinking the Russian flagship, killing many sailors, we could be creating an opening for Putin to respond in ways that could dangerously widen this conflict — and drag the U.S. in deeper than it wants to be.

It is doubly dangerous, senior U.S. officials say, because it is increasingly obvious to them that Putin’s behavior is not as predictable as it has been in the past. And Putin is running out of options for some kind of face-saving success on the ground — or even a face-saving off ramp.

Totally agree with this. We are provoking the situation and potentially making it worse

I don't think it matters what we are doing. Even if we did absolutely nothing, the paranoid Russian government is just going to assume we are doing it anyway. How else do you explain the failure of their "vastly superior" army? It must be interference from the West.

We are supposed to believe the country that can’t feed and clothe their soldiers and let their vehicles dry rot in storage somehow has operational weapons. LOL

I can’t imagine what kind of RWNJ bubble you must be living in, if you think the 25th amendment is on the table.
Here, let’s me catch you up on some real news:
Biden and his administration are doing a good job.

There. Now you know.

Actually that makes it more dangerous,
Incompetent with nuclear weapon.

There was talk of it for trump when some of his supporters held a mostly peaceful protest at the capitol, but not when Biden might blunder into nuclear war with Russia due to clear senility?
Anonymous
I’m almost wishing for a nuclear war at this point, after watching what’s happening to women’s rights last week.
Anonymous

Oh, yes, a nuclear war would be Biden's fault. He would call Putin and tell him to push the button. For sure, he's so senile that he would do that. They should give him the cognitive test that trump said was so difficult, but he passed it . . . you know "person, man, woman, camera, TV". I'll bet Biden can pass that too.

im gonna bite and remind you that putin stretched the rubber band in question, not anyone else. And what else would we do? Just let it happen? How conciliatory you are.

1)We should have not expanded NATO membership once the USSR collapsed.
2) I would have said we are not expanding NATO to your door steps.

Americans are almost incapable of realizing other countries have interests similar to their own and act in similarly predictable ways.

What do you think would happen if China decided to install missile silos/garrison an army/etc etc in Mexico with the full cooperation of their government? Actually, think is the wrong word. What do you KNOW would happen?

Now look at Ukraine and Russia and see if you can put two and two together and work out how this entire situation could have easily been avoided.

That is a stupid analogy. China is an authoritarian regime. If a western democratic country had an alliance with mexico is the proper analogy.

No that’s perfect analogy.
Pro USA Ukraine is like
Pro Russian Mexico.
Not to be allowed in your backyard for Superpower Nation or Regional power Nation.

Except Ukraine is not in NATO and the US has no bases in Ukraine. Rascist.
