I'm the poster you replied to. I'm talking about not moving Wootton to Crown, but going with another option and rezoning Wootton. MCPS gave Wootton the option of staying together and adding Fields Rd. But because of the petition they will probably not do that. But I hope they now rezone Wootton (not just Dufief but everyone in Crown's vicinity) Move Travilah to QO. Move Dufief to Crown. Dufief, Travilah, Fallsmead, Fields Rd, Brown Station, StoneMill, Rachel Carson - no one should get any special treatment - move them all to the closest high school even if it means a split articulation. That’s different from the lawsuit discussed for several pages |
They need to restart boundary process to do that as none of the options have these. Most likely it’s still crown as holding school. Mark my words |
That would be an interesting poll. If I were mcps, I'd try to find this out. They offered Crown thinking that was what many Wootton parents wanted (students suddenly get a new building and don't even need to go through the pain of a two year holding school). But there's a ton of pushback. I think it would be interesting to find out Wootton parents' perspective on a) keep the community together in the new Crown building(and add another ES in) versus b) keep the old Wootton building, and stick with wherever it is on the improvement list, but remain the school remains subject to redrawing the lines as described in Options 1-G. |
Or they could go with any of options A-D which they have already proposed with minor modifications. |
This. I'm sure if you ask Dufief and anyone else who would be moving out of Wootton cluster in other options, they would say lets move to Crown as a whole cluster and add Fields Rd. But they would be in the minority. |
| Even if MCPS stopped all construction to only replace Wootton they’d still complain. |

Not necessarily they. But someone. And as already established there are many factions within the Wootton community. Some who want a new school and would be happy with the Crown location, some who invested to be in close proximity to the current school location, some who may be more towards upper class, some who may be typical for the DC Metro area standards, etc. In all honesty it would be helpful if the people supporting each one would just come out and support it. Not trying to threaten or dox anyone. But it gives a better idea on the numbers and support behind each group. So far I've only seen Wootton residents oppose Option H, both in communication within the community, signs and at board meetings. If no Wootton resident is willing to stand up or speak at a board meeting, saying that Wootton should definitely go to Crown, then they know they're in the minority and would have the crowds against them. If by they, you mean the Gaithersburg community, who Crown was originally intended for. Of course they would be angry if a school that was promised to them started construction then they stopped it to divert funds to Wootton. This seems to be a case of MCPS doing something that most people in the respective communities didn't want. In asking for Wootton to renovate, MOST Wootton residents never asked for their current school location to change. And most Gaithersburg residents want to go to the new school that is being built down the street from them. |
One vote here for keeping the old Wootton building and rezoning as needed. I hear everyone arguing that Crown is only 3 miles away, but last I checked, kids don't fly to school like crows. Do any of you have kids in high school? 80% of activities end after the activities bus leaves, which means parents picking up at school at 5pm, 6pm. Up to Crown is a hike from Fallsmead/Cold Spring/Lakewood areas. NB 270, rush hour traffic. There's always a backup at Exit 9. Lots of people have other kids at home with their own activities. Could be a 40-60 minute roundtrip for parents to get their kids in the evenings - that's a real burden on families. Look, I hate the chorus of people talking about Wootton "assets" and crap like that. I think a brand new building would be lovely and have zero concerns with my kids going to school with kids who live in Gaithersburg. We live where we live because it was the shortest commute for DH and I that we could afford. But we are a family with 2 full-time working parents and younger kids at home. No, we don't belong to a country club, but also no, we are not struggling financially. IME, this is typical of Wootton families - not rich like Whitman, BCC, or Churchill, but certainly not poor. Because of his various activities, I have to pick up my high schooler at Wootton every day, usually about 5:30. I can do that when Wootton is 5 minutes away, or he can walk if I'm busy. But it would be extremely difficult to get to Crown at 5;30 every day, because I have 2 other kids with their own schedules, plus I work. DH's job is in VA, so he's no help and my son obviously can't walk from Crown. It's just ridiculous to send these areas to Crown when Wootton, RM, and Churchill are all nearby. So yes, I vote for leaving Wootton where it is and prioritizing geography as much as possible in zoning. My vote is motivated by the practical realities of traffic in this area and (selfishly) the impact on my family, although I imagine most parents would prefer to be as close as possible to school. |
| If one had ever visited Rio during rush hours or weekend, you'd know how notoriously bad the traffic is, esp. around the I-270 fork. I can't imagine how it would look like once Crown opens, regardless of the final boundary study option. |

If they do a total rezone just send Dufief, Travilah and Stone Mill all to Crown. Dufief's main issue initially with A-D was that they were the only ones being pulled from the Wootton cluster and it was being done in a way that made no sense. If it's all three schools that are clearly closer to Crown than Wootton, have at it.
Also, it's becoming more and more obvious that Fallsmead/Lakewood care more about Wootton staying on the Parkway than keeping the cluster together. The North Potomac schools that don't really care about Option H have been quiet and going along with anti-H anyway, but now that it's clear no one cares about keeping them in the cluster hopefully they get more vocal about getting their kids into a safe school. Because this sudden change to "actually, we don't want repairs" doesn't help the kids. |
If they do this, they should move Horizon Hill back to Wootton too. Only bringing them in because you already see how some of the newer Horizon Hill posters are adamant that they don't want to go to Wootton. ANY community getting unwanted changes will complain and protest. Watch how much the Horizon Hill residents would if the posters on here are indicative of their community. But Wootton families are the ones who get attacked for complaining when these types of changes are being proposed and forced on them. |
I think it’s less of a keeping it together thing since they already are starting high school with kids they have never seen before. cabin John is split between Churchill and Wootton. I think there would be much more push to keep the cluster together of it was actually “together” in the first place. |
