There seems to be a much higher priority for Wootton parents on keeping the Wootton pkwy building open than on keeping the 6 ES’s together articulating together to the same school.
I would say that’s probably true. Many of them are split up between Wootton and Churchill after middle school anyway. We are extremely close to Wootton. Would have no problem with some movement where other very close in schools got redistricted to Wootton and those much further out redistricted elsewhere-but I want the school where it is.
That would be an interesting poll. If I were mcps, I'd try to find this out. They offered Crown thinking that was what many Wootton parents wanted (students suddenly get a new building and don't even need to go through the pain of a two year holding school). But there's a ton of pushback. I think it would be interesting to find out Wootton parents' perspective on a) keep the community together in the new Crown building(and add another ES in) versus b) keep the old Wootton building, and stick with wherever it is on the improvement list, but remain the school remains subject to redrawing the lines as described in Options 1-G.
One vote here for keeping the old Wootton building and rezoning as needed. I hear everyone arguing that Crown is only 3 miles away, but last I checked, kids don't fly to school like crows. Do any of you have kids in high school? 80% of activities end after the activities bus leaves, which means parents picking up at school at 5pm, 6pm. Up to Crown is a hike from Fallsmead/Cold Spring/Lakewood areas. NB 270, rush hour traffic. There's always a backup at Exit 9. Lots of people have other kids at home with their own activities. Could be a 40-60 minute roundtrip for parents to get their kids in the evenings - that's a real burden on families. Look, I hate the chorus of people talking about Wootton "assets" and crap like that. I think a brand new building would be lovely and have zero concerns with my kids going to school with kids who live in Gaithersburg. We live where we live because it was the shortest commute for DH and I that we could afford. But we are a family with 2 full-time working parents and younger kids at home. No, we don't belong to a country club, but also no, we are not struggling financially. IME, this is typical of Wootton families - not rich like Whitman, BCC, or Churchill, but certainly not poor. Because of his various activities, I have to pick up my high schooler at Wootton every day, usually about 5:30. I can do that when Wootton is 5 minutes away, or he can walk if I'm busy. But it would be extremely difficult to get to Crown at 5;30 every day, because I have 2 other kids with their own schedules, plus I work. DH's job is in VA, so he's no help and my son obviously can't walk from Crown. It's just ridiculous to send these areas to Crown when Wootton, RM, and Churchill are all nearby. So yes, I vote for leaving Wootton where it is and prioritizing geography as much as possible in zoning. My vote is motivated by the practical realities of traffic in this area and (selfishly) the impact on my family, although I imagine most parents would prefer to be as close as possible to school.
