That's not true. Dufief, Lakewood, Travillah and Fallsmead all currently go to Frost together. Stone Mill and Cold Spring go to Cabin John and then back to Wootton together. Hardly a group of kids starting high school who "have never seen each other before". |
They like to pretend they are the only school with smart kids. Then they complain about college admissions as there are too many smart kids and each college only takes so many students from each school. |
As a family who was originally slated to go to Crown, I wouldn't be against this. Our main two issues with some of the initial proposals were: -MCPS proposed to split articulate some elementary schools between Crown and Wootton. In one neighborhood they split the part with townhomes that range around $500k to Crown and the part with million dollar single family homes to Wootton. In another neighborhood, they split out a fraction of the elementary school, which results in about five students per grade level, if even that, being separated from their elementary school classmates upon going to high school -MCPS has those areas designated in a walking zone. Where the walk is 40 minutes and along and across busy commuter routes. If they take the entire elementary school for the area and maybe two or three other ones, it eliminates split articulation of schools and also still allows families to have the communities they thought they were buying into. Crown wouldn't be a bad school if they did do this. It would be kind of annoying that we could've just spent less money by originally buying with that type of school. Look at Northwest. They have that whole area around the soccerplex feeding into it. And I can see Crown being similar to Northwest in that way. But we could've just bought into Northwest and have a home that is twenty or thirty years newer and in a really nice community. Looking at the walkshed vs walkzone table, not every high school is listed but the majority of the high schools listed do not have the full two mile radius as the full walking zone. So for many schools the walk zone is a lot less than the walkshed. The current Wootton location was actually one of the few ones that does have it's two mile radius used as the actual walking zone. So I'm somewhat comfortable/or hope that MCPS would establish a safe walking zone to Crown HS and provide bus service where necessary. Don't get me wrong, my first choice is to remain at Wootton and at where it currently is. It's something that we purposely decided to pay the price differential when deciding between different homes. We looked all over the area. But it wouldn't the end of the world for us if they rezoned us, along with our entire elementary school and neighboring schools , and provide bus service where appropriate. |
I specifically didn’t mention Frost because I know they all go to middle school together and then Wootton together. Did you not get that is why they weren’t mentioned in the example I gave? Only 2 schools from cabin John go to High school together-that was my point. 2 fairly small schools. So yeah I would say the cabin John side of the cluster feels less cohesive than the other side. |
Technically, Dufief, Travilah and Stone Mill may be closer to Crown HS than to Wootton HS. If they split Wootton like this by rezoning, pull out some to Crown and take some in to Wootton, both Crown HS and Wootton HS exist may work. I am sure Dufief would be fine with this option since they are not alone. I would say when they build so many houses all over everywhere in MoCo, rezoning is unavoidable. |
And you are still wrong because Cold Spring hosts the CES program which all Wootton feeders can attend. Stone Mill is not small, and has a ton of overlap with summer camps, sports activities, etc. with Dufief and Travillah. Again, these kids are not strangers. |
I think Dufief would be fine with this if they took in all of Stone Mill and Travilah as well. But then how do you fill Wootton? |
Wayside and Horizon Hill. Wasn't Churchill overcrowded and how Wootton was brought in the initial conversation to begin with? |
And you have Fallsgrove as being potentially possible and possibly the new development on Research Blvd. |
If only they had started this way with the original A-D. I will always believe the developers for the new million dollar houses in Stone Mill and Travillah (Grove and Mt. Prospect) worked something out to get into the Wootton cluster. Chances are slim to none they do this sort of rezone at this point in the process. The easy answer is Crown being a holding school but I wouldn't be surprised if the board goes with H. I don't think it's Dufief or Travillah that gets kicked out though, QO is too full. I think it's likely Cold Spring. Maybe part of Fallsmead. |
So essentially zoning out half of Wootton? Wootton in on the chopping block, everyone is lining up with a knife |
Wootton was always going to be part of the Crown study because Wootton-zoned students live across the street from Crown. |
But that’s a very small part, yet now the options drag the whole Wootton in No other schools are impacted so much |
Not true, look at the original Option 1 Map: https://imgur.com/a/zHof79P In the initial rounds, MCPS did have options that left Rio island at Fallsmead, while filling Crown with just the immediate area surrounding crown. In every option in that round, Wayside was slated to go to Wootton. |
This is a hypothetic coulda, shoulda, woulda...they aren't realistically going to do this. PP was saying Wootton doesn't care about keeping the cluster together anymore as long as it stays in its building. This spun from that. |
