What's going on at Haynes? We keep hearing about people taking their kids out, very unhappy. |
This was my post from a month ago...still #1 on the list, I guess, still have not gotten a call. |
Have you called to see your status? My guess is you may have moved down the list because of admitted siblings. |
No one ever answers the phone - I have asked a couple times in person. I feel obnoxious calling all the time. |
| There are tell tale signs of a school that is slipping. Not answering the phone and forgetting that PR is one of their responsibilities are a couple. None working clocks is another. My own nonscientific litmus test. |
I am not a Haynes parent but these kind of posts are so irritating. If someone close to you is pulling their kid for a specific reason, you have more insight than what you have presented. So either you're being a gossip snob and don't know facts/spreading rumors or you're being a mean girl. |
| To 9:04- the K Stokes family- what was your number? Did you get French or Spanish? |
Not at all. We know one family there who is very happy and I've recently heard of three people who have taken their kids out. I only had a conversation with one of them about it and reasons were vague but seemed to be related to the teacher and community. One other family I didn't get a chance to ask and the third seemed to not want to talk about it. I just wondered if there was a connection - we've always had Haynes high on our list. |

I just got a letter from the DCPS that has totally different waitlist numbers than my online numbers. Which is correct?
According to the letter we are 6 for Cap City and 2 for MV and 9 for 2rivers. I'm thinking this can't be right--the online numbers were a lot higher. |
Can you call the my school dc hotline? |
Is this from round 2? You probably have to add those to the end of all the round 1 applicants. MV has its waitlist posted online, so you can see it there. |
| Yes, from round 2. I think you're correct. |

Hey, I'm "pulling" my son out of Haynes for PK4 not because the school is going downhill or anything, my son had an opportunity to attend a school with language immersion and that was our #1 priority so we did the lottery again and we did well. I enjoyed Haynes there were things I enjoyed and things I didn't enjoy but it's not on a downward spiral.

Haynes family (Pk3) returning next year. I would give it a B+, with aftercare a B or B-. I do not have other school experience to compare with, but we feel it has been a solid choice and I would contiue to recommend it. NEgatives: Communication sometimes spotty, esp with administratin but sometimes with teachers. I would prefer smaller classes with fewer teachers (the ratio of adults to students good, but the IT model perhaps more intriguing). However, I feel that my child is valued and cared for, and I have had a good experience with getting him the extra support he has needed. He is excited and happy to go to school and seems to be learning. FWIW, I did the lottery and turned down a spot (Barnard) after feeling like the move was not worth it, even though Barnard impressive in some ways, it does not 'beat' Haynes in my calcuation. I would give up a spot for LAMB, or maybe CM, but that's not happening. So, we are taking it year by year but are supporting the school in various ways. I really would like to hear from parents who are 'unhappy' particularly at older grades to know specifically why they are leaving. I would also love to know from other parents who are happy. I suspect in some ways it is less appealing TO DCUM population than other charters like creative minds or mundo verde or YY because it is a higher FARMS percentage: less money from parents for all sorts of extras, children from less advantaged backgrounds, etc. Hyanes is 60 percent low income (elementary) and 75 (middle) and 77 (high) versus YY: 16.6 low income CM: 36% LAMB: 29&% MV" 33 |
| Another Prek3 family happily returning to EL Haynes next year - the school has been great for us - I recommend it thus far - including the aftercare and intersessions. Remember it has a year-round schedule so that may influence some families decisions for logistical reasons. PS. We got in off the waitlist last year right around when the school year started. |
