Dear middle-aged women: capri pants do nothing for you.

52 and thin. No way are you getting me out of my capris. They are so much more comfortable than pants and more conservative than shorts. I can wear them to work. I can't wear shorts to work. Jeesh.

Personally, I'm not a capris fan. But this Michael guy needs to be told that no one is dressing to please his gaze, here! WTF?!

Yeah, what's the deal with the cropped, or rolled up, pants this year. They're longer than capris, just a few inches above the ankle. I've spent most of my teen and adult life trying to avoid "floods" and now they're in style. Oy!

In light of a recent thread about shorts- go for the shorts, skip the capris.

The new college students recently moved into their dorms and their middle-aged capri wearing moms swarmed the city.

Yeah, Im a proud capri wearer but only in solid black, white and I have one in fuchsia. I think it can look good on some body types. I have slim legs, no hips/thighs to speak of and I only wear them w higher heels and longer shirt. But I am petite so that's still probably a fashion faux pas. Oh well. That said, the patterned capris can look a little crazy on anybody regardless of age ( unless you're 12 and under). The OP mostly screwed up targeting folks of a certain age. Seriously, what ARE people over 40 supposed to wear according to fashionistas? Everything apparently is either too matronly or too young or too unflattering . I just turned 40 but am still small and in shape...and outside of mini skirts and kardashisnesque wear, I wear whatever I think looks flattering, classy, and somewhat youthful enough to not look matronly.

I must not understand what a capri is, because everywhere I look I see women of all ages wearing them. Here are some pictures of things I would call capris, and they all look good to me (for casual wear). Are these what the OP is talking about??

I mean, if it's a hot day at the park, taking a long walk, running after a toddler, what the heck else can you wear if you're over 40? I'm sure as heck not going to wear shorts - impractical on many levels, and also very unflattering on me. Skirts also impractical.

Yes, that's what the OP is talking about. And I agree with you: they are totally fine and can look very good on many body types so long as the cut is appropriate e.g., slim vs. slightly flared leg; positioning of pockets; etc. They can be dressed up as far as "snappy casual" and down as far as "workin' in the garden." A-ok clothing option.

NP here.

They look passable on models. But even those models would all look better in full-length pants.

I think OP went overboard suggesting shorts are better than capris because, for many women (especially middle-aged and older) they are not. That said, why not just wear full length pants and jeans. How is that inconvenient? Are you walking through water or something?

Can you say "105 degrees and humid??" You want to run around in the sun after a toddler in full length pants in VA in the summer? I'm not wearing them to work or anything. Just for walking, playing, casual shopping.

I don't see how capris provide that much heat relief compared to full length pants. It's much more about material the pants vs. capris are made of.

Personally I have no beef with capris. However, if you want a summery and cool long pants option I'd suggest linen pants. They are so comfortable even in humidity.

OK, now I get it. The anti-capri movement is clearly led by people without small children, who do not actually need their clothes to perform in heat, dirt and humidity. Obviously you all are simply walking from one air-conditioned place to another most of the time. Stop by a playground sometime and see how many moms are there in long pants on a really hot day (number = 0). But lots of capris. And yes, there is water and dirt involved - if you wanted to look silly in long pants and be really uncomfortable, you could get a pair of light pants and then have them black on the bottom by the end of the day.

Most of the women I see in capris haven't been the parents of small children since the 80s or 90s.

+1

And they are not on the playground when I see them.
