She's been working in Russia long enough to know you don't take controlled substances with you. Don't forget the timing of her arrest. Her (carefully planned with her lawyer) defense is that she never intended to pack it and in fact still does not know how it got in her luggage. She cannot outright deny doing it, because Russia has a 99% conviction rate and the only hope she has of not getting sentenced to 10+ years in prison is by pleading guilty. Her statement allows for the possibility that she did it and doesn't accuse anyone of planting it in her luggage, but definitely leaves that option open for how it got there.

Definitely possible she didn't, just like I don't think Warmbier took down the banner. But that (getting falsely accused of crimes with little/no recourse) is a risk you take when you go to countries like N. Korea and Russia. When you willingly do things you know have a huge risk, the US government should not make huge sacrifices to bail you out.

I think it's entirely possible she did. But so what? If a Russian national was caught in possession of that quantity they WOULD NOT BE JAILED. They would have had to appear and pay a fine. This whole thing is trumped up and political and everyone, EVERYONE needs to be calling it out for what it is - callous and illegitimate gamesmanship by Russia and shaming Russia for it.

And Britney Griner is not Russian. If a country wants to extend special privileges to it's citizens that it does no afford non citizens, that is their right. I wish the US would do more of that.

What? You sound like a lunatic or an idiot.

No, I sound like someone with rational common sense. You sound like an ignorant extremist.

She admitted to actually leaving them in her luggage, so there's that.

An incarcerated person held by autocrats can be made to admit to anything.

The fact that anyone would believe the Russian government over a fellow American just goes to show how unpatriotic many of you scumbags are.

This all day. Why on earth would anyone believe she is actually guilty?

Because she admitted to accidentally leaving the items in her luggage.
Have you heard ANYONE in her camp claiming she has been set up? Have you heard ANYONE claim that the items were not actually hers?

You don’t know how any of this works you naive dumbf#ck.

She's trying to get out of Russian jail, her accusing them of anything is not going to accomplish this goal. Her family would also be aware of this. What she's actually said appears tailored to thread the needle she needs to thread - admit guilt (the only way to receive a lighter sentence; this is why they have a 99% conviction rate), but say it was an accident and beg for leniency. What really happened is truly anyone's guess. But I found it very hard to believe Russia just so happened to catch her, a public figure (I certainly knew who she was and I don't follow the WNBA) doing something that dumb, right as US-Russia relations imploded.

That is true but on the other hand she has a long history of being dumb as a brick. Unfortunately both scenarios are equally plausible. The big issue is that she was busted while exiting not entering Russia. Her "crime" was possession not importation.

I think she thought she could get away with bringing it in or really was/is really dumb to not even check the laws there. Either way, she was crazy stupid to go over there as the war was about to start. I do not care how much she makes for playing there for a few months. Bad idea from the get go.

I am fine with her serving a few years over there: it is not like she some great asset to society to cure cancer or something.

Trading her for someone we know will try to kill Americans again is a terrible swap.

Other countries values and sentences are not the same as ours….if you are old enough….do you remember that kid who got caned…. Other countries are horrified by our justice system where you are divided by race or rape is common in male prison.

That oil was hers, she just never got caught..it is sad that we are making this a political issue. The question is….was that oil hers? Is what she did illegal? Same with the North Koran kid…1, no one should be dumb enough to go to a country where the US has no diplomatic ties. 2. Don’t violate the law! No matter how small in a country that has horrible relations with the US.

Michael Fay in Singapore. That was in the early 90s. Many Americans actually SUPPORTED him being caned. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_P._Fay

Prisons that "divide by race" are actually segregating by gang affiliation for safety reasons. Prison gang membership is along racial lines so that is what they are "dividing." In fact, there have been cases where corrupt guards have intentionally "integrated" to watch the blood bath for entertainment. https://www.prisonlegalnews.org/news/2020/apr/1/california-prison-officials-put-hold-policy-led-gladiator-fights/

You basically stating that the US does not control its jails. Security in prison can be done, but is not….you didn’t address the substance of my post….she got caught with drugs and she has to deal with the consequences. I’ve travelled the world including Moscow….people talk about dumb Americans all the time because we don’t respect the country we are in.

I agree with you that she needs to deal with the consequences. I only addressed the other parts (giving Michael Fay's name and stating WHY US prison's are "segregated") because that was all that needed to be addressed.

No, I did not "basically state that the US does not control it's jails"--nothing of the sort. Keeping the populations segregated is HOW they control it. If other countries are "horrified" that the US takes preventative steps to ensure that there are not "gladiator" style battles...well, those other countries are pretty sick in the head. I have nothing more to say about that.

Honestly, you don't seem to understand how anything works. Why don't you just see yourself out and get back on your meds.

Left leaning boater here and I am very much against this deal to bring her home. She broke the law and should do the time. We have people in this country in jail for marijuana charges. We're going to release a drug dealer to get her home? Nope

They should follow standard practice across the board in how they prosecute, not make up arbitrary special rules for certain people. The fact that they are treating Greiner so differently from anyone else may be their right and their prerogayive but it also shows aa sham being orchestrated by them for political reasons and we have every right to call them out for it.

You wouldn't say this if she was a straight white male.

And you wouldn’t be for the prisoner swap if she was either.

Ok, but they DON'T. They are not subject to what you, the US government, or anyone else thinks they "should" do. That's why it's a bad idea to go there.
