People actually think Griner brought cannibis vape cartridges into Russia? I think the odds she actually did that are pretty low. She's been working in Russia long enough to know you don't take controlled substances with you. Don't forget the timing of her arrest. Her (carefully planned with her lawyer) defense is that she never intended to pack it and in fact still does not know how it got in her luggage. She cannot outright deny doing it, because Russia has a 99% conviction rate and the only hope she has of not getting sentenced to 10+ years in prison is by pleading guilty. Her statement allows for the possibility that she did it and doesn't accuse anyone of planting it in her luggage, but definitely leaves that option open for how it got there.
Definitely possible she didn't, just like I don't think Warmbier took down the banner. But that (getting falsely accused of crimes with little/no recourse) is a risk you take when you go to countries like N. Korea and Russia. When you willingly do things you know have a huge risk, the US government should not make huge sacrifices to bail you out.
I think it's entirely possible she did. But so what? If a Russian national was caught in possession of that quantity they WOULD NOT BE JAILED. They would have had to appear and pay a fine. This whole thing is trumped up and political and everyone, EVERYONE needs to be calling it out for what it is - callous and illegitimate gamesmanship by Russia and shaming Russia for it.
And Britney Griner is not Russian. If a country wants to extend special privileges to it's citizens that it does no afford non citizens, that is their right. I wish the US would do more of that.
They should follow standard practice across the board in how they prosecute, not make up arbitrary special rules for certain people. The fact that they are treating Greiner so differently from anyone else may be their right and their prerogayive but it also shows aa sham being orchestrated by them for political reasons and we have every right to call them out for it.
