Britney Griner deal

Wait, we're considering trading someone in jail for selling arms to terrorists for a basketball player? What?

ridiculous!

The US would get two citizens back.

I'm okay with it. We won't have to house the Russian prisoner we have now and we get 2 American's back who don't seem to have done anything nefarious.

She took illegal drugs to Russia. Their country, their rules. She did the crime, now she must do the time. I agree that we should not be doing a prisoner exchange in this circumstance. It’s clearly just a political stunt by a desperately failing administration.

No. We're trading a man who did more than half of his sentence, giving him over to Russia in exchange for a person. And American citizen. Not a basketball player. Person. even the prosecutor who prosecuted this guy thinks this is a good deal

Yes, they're both "people" but the point is the prisoner we're swapping her for is in jail for selling arms to terrorists. We really want that PERSON let out of jail to sell arms to terrorists all over again in exchange for Britney Griner? That seems like a terrible trade. How about we let out someone whose crime is on the same level as using CBD vape cartridges instead?

Because the Russians wouldn’t take that deal. They play to win.

You wouldn't say this if she was a straight white male.

PP here. Of course I would. All American citizens are equal, and there should be absolutely no difference in treatment. She committed a crime under Russian law, and was subject to their jurisdiction. Read the inside cover of your US passport. It’s all laid out very clearly.

I want to stop rescuing all the idiots. The ones who go hiking without water or any sense of direction. The ones who try to sail around the world. The ones who accidentally hike into North Korea. The ones who commit petty crimes in hostile countries.

Let them accept their Darwin awards.

Eh, they didn’t give a shit until their invasion of Ukraine didn’t go as well as they’d hoped.

NP. Thanks for using “people” in scare quotes, it’s helpful when determining how much weight to give your opinion.

Locked Up Abroad was a really good cable show about 10 years ago. Comes on late at night now on one of those off, off, off broadcast networks like Grio or something. It's all about Americans stupidly thinking they can bring drugs in or out without getting caught and suffering terrible consequences, staying locked up in tiny, bug and rat-infested overcrowded cells and eventually escaping, running day and night through a jungle with bleeding feet, crawling to the American consulate and finally flying home. Sometimes they get executed....

It happens.

I used quotes because it's stupid to pretend I wasn't talking about her as a person. WTH. I was comparing their PROFESSIONS not whether or not they are human.

One is dangerous for all of us on this planet -- someone who sells arms to terrorists. The other one is a basketball player who uses CBD vape cartridges. Can you not see the difference?
