She is sentenced to 9 years. No mercy at all.

Other countries values and sentences are not the same as ours….if you are old enough….do you remember that kid who got caned…. Other countries are horrified by our justice system where you are divided by race or rape is common in male prison.

That oil was hers, she just never got caught..it is sad that we are making this a political issue. The question is….was that oil hers? Is what she did illegal? Same with the North Koran kid…1, no one should be dumb enough to go to a country where the US has no diplomatic ties. 2. Don’t violate the law! No matter how small in a country that has horrible relations with the US.

The US had fairly normal relations with Russia before the Ukrainian invasion. Thousands of Americans visited daily without issue. When Putin started his war of choice, sh#t went nuts

Fairly normal???? Hahah. Ok.

Sorry, but, your run the risk if you go to Russia and then even more so if you violate the law. But no, the US and Russia didn’t have a normal relationship before Ukraine.

I used to live in Russia. They have lots of laws that no one pays any attention to, or exist merely to allow someone to request a bribe to ignore them. I’m sure this is one of them and she’s probably traveled with no issue previously. I stopped going to Russia many years ago because I have/had so little trust in the government—who could say when it would be a $20 bribe or when it would be something worse? Kleptocracies suck.

Eh, do the crime, do the time. It would be impossible for me to care less.

This.

Swapping a druggie bball player and a "spy" for a known arms dealing terrorist is a terrible deal.

Neither one is an innocent US citizen. Both committed crimes while on Russian soil. It would be different if these were innocent citizens who were just arrested for show. Nine years isn't even that long.

Russia isn’t even in the top 10 countries with harshest drug laws. See the UAE, in Dubai someone got 4 years for having a couple poppy seeds from a bagel he ate the the airport stuck on his clothes.

Best to avoid these countries, they enforce crazy laws when it suits them or someone powerful. Don’t look the wrong way at Simone in those counties, it may cost you.

The easiest answer seems to be grabbing a few Oligarchs or their kids either here or off of their yachts and exchanging them for our prisoners.

Exactly. Arrest prominent Russian nationals, especially those with ties to Putin and oligarchs on flimsy trumped up charges and give them extremely harsh sentences.

When the Russians complain about the harsh sentences on flimsy charges, smile at them and say "AHA! GET IT NOW?"

You wouldn't say this if she was a straight white male.

PP here. Of course I would. All American citizens are equal, and there should be absolutely no difference in treatment. She committed a crime under Russian law, and was subject to their jurisdiction. Read the inside cover of your US passport. It’s all laid out very clearly.

+1 Well said. The pp is bitter.

It's all about Americans stupidly thinking they can bring drugs in or out without getting caught and suffering terrible consequences, staying locked up in tiny, bug and rat-infested overcrowded cells and eventually escaping, running day and night through a jungle with bleeding feet, crawling to the American consulate and finally flying home. Sometimes they get executed....

It happens.

I like "Border Patrol" it's on YouTube about illegals trying to sneak into UK or Canada. It's fascinating!

Easy, breezy.

She was caught with CBD vape, hemp oil
Just because it is allowed in the US doesn't mean it is safe to travel internationally. She should have left it behind, own fault

Guys, be real. They cannot leave her in a Russian prison. She's famous and a leftwing activist.

Agreed but it was multiple cannabis cartridges which is considered a trafficking offense in Russia. I have some sympathy for her if it was just a stupid mistake but I don’t think some rando athlete is worth trading for the merchant of death.

Is it beyond your naive world view to think that Russia could have planted the drugs on her as a pretext? Do you believe the Russian government when they make accusations?
