BVR is requiring 5 year olds to wear KN95 masks

Where’s the science on this? Every study shows Covid causes virtually no harm in young children and transmission rates are very low whilst wearing masks could have long term psychological consequences.

I don’t get any of the comments. Everyone’s required to wear masks indoors. That isn’t bvr’s rule; that’s the mandate. Kn95s and similar are more comfortable than regular masks, and they’re more effective.

Most of these comments are anti-mask and pro-letting kids get COVID on the assumption that no kid will be the unlucky one who needs a hospital bed but can’t get one because the hospitals are full of unvaccinated idiots who won’t do their basic duty as citizens. That’s not a totally indefensible position, but…that is literally not a choice that is on the table.

Ten pages arguing on a private school forum about an issue that is really about a mask mandate….smh.

OP here. I was fine with my kids wearing cloth masks (not thrilled, but accepting of the rules). My kids have never worn a KN95 mask, but I have and I can’t breath with it. I can’t imagine my kids being able to run, play, etc while wearing one of those. On top of that, my kids (and all of their classmates) are fully vaccinated since a few weeks ago.

My children and I will accept the rule of course, but I am really mad about it and I am starting to see that “the other side” has several valid points.

I also have a 2 year old that has to wear a mask. I think this is ridiculous too because he chews on it and it’s always drenched when I pick him up…. But that’s another story.

I wish there was a middle ground where kids had to get tested (maybe even twice a week) and do not need to wear these awful masks that I personally can’t stand for more than a few minutes and did not have to breath all of their carbon dioxide.

Are they offering virtual option? Staying home has its own psychological consequence. I suspect in a few months the science and the politics will unite and kids will be going to school mask free again. (Maybe a few kids will still be wearing masks but the majority will not.)

Interesting how people just blindly accept these mandates without conducting an even cursory search of the facts, both for and against mask wearing. Data out of Sweden where no masks are required for students shows they don’t make a difference. And the US is one of only seven countries that require students to mask up and I think we can all agree that the US hasn’t exactly been a leader in fighting Covid.

I suspect the only person in your family who has a problem with the mask is you. Your kids, like every other kid, don’t care. Theyre fine with it and understand what kindness and responsibility mean.

OP here. What can we do about it? We need to follow the rules no matter how stupid they are. I wrote to the nurses and they believe the masks won’t be worse for my kids than the cloth ones they have always been wearing.

OP, as you are well aware one of the main Beauvoir Life Rules is being Respectful

Your challenging the HOS'/ and school's Public Health advisors anonymously in a public forum to try to pressure them to change their policy decision isn't respectful.

So I don’t agree with all of this, as I don’t think these masks pose any danger. I’m gonna try one out when I return to my teaching job on Monday, but if I can’t stand it, I won’t wear it. I am vaccinated. I am boosted. I stayed home for months on end. To act like a milder wave of illness that I have some protection from merits even more intense precautions than were taken in March 2020 is too much. I am a liberal. I hated Trump. But I can see some of the points of the other side as well.

When I said virtue signaling earlier, I think I was onto something. It’s become a sign of political allegiance to take the most extreme Covid precautions. You can call that selfish, but I’m at peace with everything I’ve done. I wear my cloth mask happily. But I’m allowed to be concerned about my one year-old at daycare who is surrounded by masked people. I’m allowed to question whether young children really should be masking at this point, especially given the advice of the WHO.

Yes. It’s mind boggling. Lockdowns and masks have not stopped the spread. Florida has surges and so do we. France and Italy have surges and so does Sweden. Is no one concerned about the effects of young kids not seeing faces for this long? A KN95 provides great protection and for those that need to be extra cautious it’s a great option. But let the rest of the kids be free

Are all other schools do the same?
Do you think 2 3-layers masks are easier for little kids than KN95 masks?

Science says the cloth masks are not as effective for Omicron. The kids really don't care, they adapt. Would you rather have a sick kid?

Honestly? If my kid got omicron and basically had a cold for a few days, then yes, I would rather that happen than the entire school forced to be gagged indefinitely.

Happy now?

It’s not just a cold. My healthy vaxxed kid got pneumonia from it. Passed covid to entire family. I am quite ill now. Kids pass it to others including you. It’s not a big deal until you can’t catch your breath and your chest is tight. Trust me you don’t know how it will affect you.

Does anyone know of other schools requiring use of certified disposable masks rather than cloth? I am trying to get my school to require this for students, faculty and staff. Thanks!

The problem is that we won’t know the deleterious psychological effects of prolonged mask wearing for a very long time. Weighed against the insignificant health risk of Covid to children I think this is absolutely the wrong decision and would seem more based on social cues than science.

+1

I think many speed limits are stupid. That camera is still going to send me a ticket.
