| She abstained from the first Skyview vote to buy the building as well. The sad thing is that there are enough families that don't have kids who will vote for her because they are not following this mess that she stands a good chance of getting re-elected. |
Think so too. If she really cared, she would have tried to influence the last round of scenarios to include one version with foxmill staying in slhs. |
Well, she voted against it from the beginning, didn't she? Does she choose world languages at all her high schools? I'm guessing they made the choices based on enrollment wishes. |
Meren is a total disaster. I miss Pat Hynes, the previous Hunter Mill board member. I just googled her. Apparently she survived cancer and continued teaching at Arlington county. https://wjla.com/news/local/arlington-virginia-culmore-clinic-falls-church-local-teacher-celebrates-20-years-breast-cancer-free-diagnosis-fundraiser-pat-hynes-school-board-member-research-melanoma |
| I realize the early education area may have been quite beautiful, but that should not be a priority. These people need to get with the reality of needs. Right now, it is for high school students. |
She didn’t vote against buying KAA. She abstained. She can say she abstained because she didn’t think FCPS had adequately developed the case for buying Skyview or estimated the total costs or the impact on other projects in the CIP. And she can say that, now that FCPS is moving ahead, she still thinks it would make sense to wait another year and open a school with more students and activities, and that the boundaries would make more sense if they included Crossfield rather than Fox Mill. Given that she’s in the minority bloc on the SB, she’s not in a position to ensure that Crossfield rather than Fox Mill is zoned to Skyview. She can say the boundaries fail to minimize commuting times since kids will still be traveling a long way to Oakton, and that they reverse most of the changes that a prior School Board determined were appropriate for South Lakes @ 15 years ago. If you’re in Reston, and mostly see South Lakes coming out of this process weaker, that plays fairly well. |
She is in a minority bloc because of how she votes and then how she tries to influence things. It would have been better for her to vote no on buying the school, at least that is a position. She could have laid out her argument, whatever it was, and disagreed with the rest. But that would have required having a spine. By abstaining, all she does is roll over and set herself up as someone they don't have to take seriously. The one reason I heard from her at a meeting for not wanting to buy the schoolw as that it wasn't fair to the other schools that were older to have a new school. Now, if she had said "We have schools in desperate need of repair and we can adjust the boundaries to make use of open seats in Herndon and SLHS" I could have respected that. I don't have to agree with it but it is a defnesable position. She could have been involved in the boundaries arguing that Crossfield should be moved to cut back on commute times. She might not have won the argument but it was defensable. Instead, she says nothing or, worse yet, puts out bad information. Then, at the last minute, acts surprised at the changes that are being made and who might be moved. When the schools in questions have been discussed since December. Ridiculous. |
+1 Meren is a total disaster. She flew off the rails last night at the school board meeting when the school board decided to study her anti technology motions, instead of rushing to implement them this coming fall (in 2 months!). She screamed and slammed her fists. She’s a nasty piece of work. |
I miss that one sensible lady who used to argue with everyone else during Covid. |
I didn't watch the whole thing, but did catch that she made some reference about how hard she had worked and her name not on it--talking about the technology issues. I absolutely do not understand how she can pretend to be surprised at the Fox Mill move. I think that is to protect herself from criticism from South Lakes parents who are not in Fox Mill. |
At the end of one of her rantings she screamed that it wasn’t fair for her to not get any credit for what the board passed. As if she was only doing it for click bait tik tok videos. She really is a child. |
Megan McLaughlin? Agree. At least she wasn't stupid. |
She's not wrong about the the early childhood space. Reid's pathway ideas are stupid, she could have created an early childhood learning Academy there. There is huge demand for daycare/preschool teachers in this area. |
She could not have been surprised about Fox Mill. It has been in most scenarios. Did she not follow the process? I think that was for her South Lakes families who are not slated to move. Someone even posted in the first four scenarios on the first thread about boundaries that Meren would not like that plan--and then RIO screamed and Fox Mill became included in several scenarios. If she tries to pull Fox Mill out now, I would expect a very negative reaction from the Fox Mill community. But, bringing up the language programming was just odd. I don't think the School Board normally gets into that. But, since Fox Mill has Japanese immersion, that is another suggestion that makes the Fox Mill move make sense. Meren should have jumped on board a long time ago. She might have had some impact. Once upon a time, she could have had strong influence on this--but, it would appear she will likely not have the support of the other Board members. That rant last night is troubling. What office does she want to run for? Or is she looking for a political appointment? |
