From the transcript on You tube: 4:37:124 Meren: Okay. I have some related. You know, I've said from the get-go that too renovate the gorgeous early childhood space would be heartbreaking because it is so nice. And I thought there was a vision for that. But when I read the general information, it talks about, you know, updating for high school, Houston. And that's unclear. It's is 2 million dollars you know, we heard tonight about other schools that have been waiting for longer. So I I do have questions about it. I also just want to expand that. This just follows a pattern of questions that I continue to have, including about the pyramid and a vision for it. You know, our high schools are the hearts of pyramids. And so we think about what's going to rent the renovated and happened there. You know, I've asked is there a middle school assigned to the pyramid? super response was it's unclear. I asked about our they're intentional selections of elementary schools in the pyramid because, you know, Flores says identified Oak Hill and also FOX Mill Elementary, which was a surprise to me. They would host. They'll be moving. And I started looking into pyramid makeup and there's that seemed to be an intentionality on like what's going to go into this pyramid. What's going to be assigned? There's also I. I've learned that there's academic programs like Spanish, French and Japanese going in. I heard that through the Grapevine that there are any official word and the board has talked at length about wanting to know more about world language decisions. And I even pulled up from the going order. 4:38:454 hours, 38 minutes, 45 seconds Dixit: State>> I think talking with architecture program right now. Is it are we talking about everything else? I would ask that due to late hour and the fact that we have to return to close that we keep our comments related to the specific item on the agenda Ms. Meren: well, I can continue with saying that these decisions are being made without informing the board. And that is the trend that I'm seeing is that we're getting information about a contract that's not in the format that we usually get contracts in. And programming decisions happening here without any data about why rush using these particular programs we did authorize the general studies. I get that. But it's just this You know, why? 4:39:314 hours, 39 minutes, 31 secondsThere's no details about, you know, why these selections are happening.
So, she is concerned about everything...multiple members of the board particularly Dixit and McDaniel have been involved in the Skyview process, and their involvement was no secret. She should have sought to be involved as well. She is now attempting to publicly absolve herself of any Skyview-related decisions so she can punt responsibility if anyone gets angry.
Well, she voted against it from the beginning, didn't she? Does she choose world languages at all her high schools? I'm guessing they made the choices based on enrollment wishes.
She didn’t vote against buying KAA. She abstained. She can say she abstained because she didn’t think FCPS had adequately developed the case for buying Skyview or estimated the total costs or the impact on other projects in the CIP. And she can say that, now that FCPS is moving ahead, she still thinks it would make sense to wait another year and open a school with more students and activities, and that the boundaries would make more sense if they included Crossfield rather than Fox Mill. Given that she’s in the minority bloc on the SB, she’s not in a position to ensure that Crossfield rather than Fox Mill is zoned to Skyview. She can say the boundaries fail to minimize commuting times since kids will still be traveling a long way to Oakton, and that they reverse most of the changes that a prior School Board determined were appropriate for South Lakes @ 15 years ago. If you’re in Reston, and mostly see South Lakes coming out of this process weaker, that plays fairly well.
She is in a minority bloc because of how she votes and then how she tries to influence things. It would have been better for her to vote no on buying the school, at least that is a position. She could have laid out her argument, whatever it was, and disagreed with the rest. But that would have required having a spine. By abstaining, all she does is roll over and set herself up as someone they don't have to take seriously. The one reason I heard from her at a meeting for not wanting to buy the schoolw as that it wasn't fair to the other schools that were older to have a new school. Now, if she had said "We have schools in desperate need of repair and we can adjust the boundaries to make use of open seats in Herndon and SLHS" I could have respected that. I don't have to agree with it but it is a defnesable position. She could have been involved in the boundaries arguing that Crossfield should be moved to cut back on commute times. She might not have won the argument but it was defensable. Instead, she says nothing or, worse yet, puts out bad information. Then, at the last minute, acts surprised at the changes that are being made and who might be moved. When the schools in questions have been discussed since December. Ridiculous.
+1 Meren is a total disaster. She flew off the rails last night at the school board meeting when the school board decided to study her anti technology motions, instead of rushing to implement them this coming fall (in 2 months!). She screamed and slammed her fists. She’s a nasty piece of work.
