Which of these women is 'doing better'?

Someone asked me this and I thought it was an interesting thought experiment.

a. Woman 1: SAHM earning 0, dh earns $500k.
b. Woman 2: WOHM who earns $1m. Dh is SAHD earning 0.

Who would you rather be?

Definitely B.

As long as the marriage was happy and the DH was truly a good SAHD to the kids.

I’d probably prefer DH had a PT job/gig or intensive hobby/interest etc. for his own happiness though….at least once the kids are preschool age +.

I have a friend in this type of situation and her DH has been a great SAHD (and a great cook as well). Cleaning has always been outsourced. He has always had a PT gig that he loves he loves but doesn’t make much $.

C. The woman making a million dollars at a relatively low-stress job with no kids and no husband to stress her out. Also, with no idiot friends.

Op - I think you have to assume that both jons are not extraordinarily awful and can be done by the person without undue hardship

If DH was a wonderful SAHD, b. I'd be thrilled. I have no desire to stay home.

I like sah so a but either is doing well if in a happy and stable marriage.

B with a fabulous nanny and/or highly involved grandparents. The DH is sort of irrelevant.

Men make terrible SAHPs IME. And nearly all of them are terrible parents to kids under 5ish.

I've been B (although DH has always worked). Now I'm A and much happier. I did make my husband sign a post-nuptual agreement when I quit, however.
