Parents should be able to request a different teacher FOR ANY REASON they want.

Any parent can make any request that want. Whether it gets granted is a different story.

Exactly. I can sue you because I think you're an idiot, and because I don't like that you wear purple pants and because you're left-handed. But it doesn't mean the case will go anywhere.

Savvy people can make good cases. And if enough parents don't want the teacher, guess what? They're out.

Just frame it as something else about the teaching style is not a good fit for your child. Easy.

If Patty Reed runs again, I will absolutely vote against her.

Right, because North Korea is so good about protecting civil rights.

If you are talking about Patty Reed, she abstained.

I don't understand that poster either.

Patty Reed voted for the resolution to delay the vote so that costs could be studied and parents could offer feedback. She read a long list of questions and concerns that parents and community members had posed to the school board which the school board did not yet have answers to.

She abstained from voting on the actual ammendment. It was not clear if it was because she thought the board was going about this the wrong way, or if she didn't support the vote but did not want to vote against it because of the gay family member mentioned briefly in her speech.

She spoke for a long while and seemed at least interested in hearing parent feedback and taking the time to study the issue and all its implications before moving forward.

My impression was that if they had delayed the vote, she likely would have voted for it and/or been a very helpful and thoughtful voice in framing any policies. She struck me as being the most representative of how many people feel ahout this issue, compassionate and thoughtful for these children but very unhappy about how the board went about this vote.

I predict FCPS will have a mass exodus of disgruntled parents who'll enroll their children in private schools.

A workable solution to the overcrowding problem.

That would help the over crowding, although I think it is just a very vocal minority.

PP quoted about the mass exodus and I'm not so sure about it being a vocal minority. There are many disgruntled, disappointed and disallusioned parents within FCPS and there are a host of hot button issues and changes that haven't been warmly accepted and welcomed (school infrastructure, overcrowding, sweeping demographic shifts at schools, over-emphasis on SOLs, the AAP program, ill-supported EAP planning, spotty ESL programs...combine that with a new superintendent who's enacted more changes (SLEEP, elimination of half day kindergarten), stressed out teachers who aren't getting raises any time soon and...things are going to change. Money talks and parents who can afford to do so will send their children to private schools.

I don't believe it's a well thought-out plan, and if they don't put together good guidelines we'll end up with unintended results. Call me a jackass all you want, a lot of people are not comfortable with the idea of a transgender being in a position of authority over their kids. [/b]
