I would also like to be able to request my kids not be in the same class with children whose parents are jackasses--any advice re: how to do this?

It's great how tolerant and accepting of others' views you are.

So conservatives get to switch to get away from people that they don't agree with, but liberals have to put up with conservatives?

How's that hypocrisy working out for you?

No, actually, the true hypocrites are liberals. They generally want any idea that they don't like to be outlawed, and if anyone disagrees with them, they are accused of being a bigot, a racist, a homophobe, or whatever other name they come up with. I'm tired of the lies from liberals. Every conservative I know is more accepting and tolerant of people with different beliefs, but every liberal I encounter is full of hate for anyone who disagrees with them about anything. The most arrogant, egotistical people on the damned planet.

This is more than just a codifying step.

Just based on the claims by the board that they were doing this because the feds are threatening to pull all federal funding from fcps is
reason enough that they should have been publicizing this extensively prior to voting.

Or was that just a stretched truth being used by the board to justify ther actions.

Any decision that is related to a district losing their federal funds should be clearly, loudly and extensively publicized to the people of the district.

Simple procedural votes do not involve the loss of federal funds.

Wait a minute. How did this turn into conservative vs liberal?

Good question. I'm the PP who said I don't want my kids in the class with the children whose parents are jackasses and I'm pretty middle of the road (my bedroom safe holds a gun AND a vaporizer). I've voted Third Party in every major election that I can remember. From what I've seen/ heard in discussions with my friends and neighbors who have kids in FCPS, people are all over the place re: this topic, regardless of political affiliation. Anyone who thinks this is a liberal vs conservative issue is sorely mistaken.
Sadly, there are some people so imbedded in ideology and rhetoric that they cannot see the truth and seek to make everything us vs them life isn't thT gut and dry--at least for the sane.

These may simply be stating the obvious but why not just say we won't desveriminate--period without carving out special groups. Isn't that what is appropriate anyway?

The fact that you didn't keep up with the votes and issues doesn't mean it is secret. The school boss doesn't have to knock on your door and hold your hand.

I actually knew about this as it was unfolding.

However, not a single other person I know was aware this was happening until this past week or so.

Yes. The school board works for us and it is their duty to very publically inform their constituents of any controversial votes that also involves the potential loss of federal funds.

You did not listen to what they said. Just because you were not successful in persuading them to your side, does NOT mean they did not listen to the people who emailed, telephoned or said about the issue- from all sides of the issue. Just because the people who came to oppose the change yelled louder than those who came to support it - does not mean that the opposers were in the majority in the county.

Then why not postpone the vote to at least notify the parents in advance by sending one email about the topic being considered and also surveying the parents to see wuere the feelings of the district fall?

How many emails do we receive about the budget issue? Anti bullying program? High school sleep schedules?

What infuriated most people was the secret and under the table way the board went about this and the lack of regard their methods and attitudes showed for the people they are elected to represent. I think they lost a lot of middle of the road support in the way they went about this.

It was not secretive. It was done the same way all procedural votes are done. Do you know how many more emails we would get if the SB sent out a notice on ALL upcoming votes? It is up to us a citizens get information and the information was available on the website just as it always is.

I did NOT see a lack of regard from the school board, I saw a school board acting in the way it should.

I don't believe it's a well thought-out plan, and if they don't put together good guidelines we'll end up with unintended results. Call me a jackass all you want, a lot of people are not comfortable with the idea of a transgender being in a position of authority over their kids.

Replace this with any other minority group and see how this statement sounds to you. Also, as an important side note, it wouldn't be "a transgender" teaching your kid. It would be a transgendered person.

Parents should be able to request a different teacher FOR ANY REASON they want.

Any parent can make any request that want. Whether it gets granted is a different story.

Yeah, that's not how it works. If you want that much control over who teaches your child, you need to homeschool.
