Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
Yes, so let's add an itemized list of mental illnesses to the protected class list. Good enough for one mental illness good enough for all. |
Exactly! |
Because they were not paying attention. Maybe they'll have learned their lesson to keep up and not wait for a message to fall from the sky. |
|
No.
They did not hear about this because the school board purposefully and deliberately did this in a way to slide the change in with no parent knowlege or input. You know this as does everyone else so quit playing dumb. Own it. They were purposefully sneaky. They wanted zero parent input. They almost managed to get it through without anyone finding out. Just based on the pretend federal mandate and the made up required "consultant" expense alone, this should have been well publicized in tye same way that fcps pubicizes ALL changes, even little changes. This secrecy was very deliberate and to pretend otherwise and then blame the parents for not knowing is just idiotic, no matter where you fall on this issue. |
What is it you fear about your child having a transgender teacher? I don't understand the concern. |
People with mental illnesses are (and should be) protected. You can't discriminate against someone with a mental illness. If that illness is keeping them from doing their job (just as if a physical illness is keeping someone from doing their job), that's one thing. But if it doesn't affect job performance, they can't be discriminated against. Slight digression, I know, but anyway. |
Then why the need to list it separately if it is already protected like other mental illnesses and if, according to fcps school board the district has never had a complaint about discrimination by any transgendered people? It is also already covered by existing district bullying policy This gives special protection above and beyond all other mental illnesses. |
Being transgender is not a mental illness, according to the psychiatrists who complied the DSM-V. |
Please don't cite wikipedia. The DSM-V dropped "gender identity disorder" and added dysphoria. Here's a quote from the DSM-V fact sheet: "It is important to note that gender nonconformity is not in itself a mental disorder. The critical element of gender dysphoria is the presence of clinically significant distress associated with the condition." (I added the bolding.) Here's a link to the fact sheet: http://www.dsm5.org/documents/gender%20dysphoria%20fact%20sheet.pdf This is essentially the same trajectory that being gay followed in the DSM. |
I think you mean "compiled." And I think most of society disagrees with them. Anyone who has ever had a serious illness, or knows someone who has, knows that medicine is an art, not a science. Just because a group of psychiatrists say something does not make it so. This is a group of doctors that routinely make up "disorders" so their buddies in the pharm industry can sell more meds. But I digress. Teachers are in a unique position in our society in that they are role models to children. The issue for parents is not whether trans can do the job, but what message they send to impressionable young children about what constitutes normal behavior. It is not normal for someone to reject their biology and have extensive surgery to become a gender they are not. It's kind of surprising that this behavior is increasing at a time when society is growingly accepting a wide range of behavior from either gender (i.e., public cross-dressing, openly married gays and lesbians). Because teachers are role models, there are private schools who will not hire teachers because they have tattoos (and no, I do not have a problem with tattoos; I am simply pointing something out). There are teachers who do not get hired because they openly smoke. Teachers are asked not to include students and families on their Facebook pages and other social media. Teachers are role models, and part of their job is to live their lives and behave in an exemplary manner. A tran has a very obvious mental illness. No, they should not be shunned. But nor should they be role models for our kids. |
Oh, yes, sorry, I meant compiled. Typos and auto correct do happen. Thanks for pointing that out. I think you have a very limited understanding of what it means to be transgender, based on your post. For example, not all people who are transgender have sex reassignment surgery. Are you a psychiatrist, psychologist or other clinician who is qualified to diagnose mental illness? Or is your opinion that this is "a very obvious mental illness" simply based on your personal beliefs? |
And to follow up, I'll ask you again: what is your concern about a transgender teacher teaching your children? And whatever those concerns are, do they also extend to gay people teaching your children? |
Are you? I certainly hope you are, seeing that you claim I have a "very limited understanding" of the situation. If you are not, I would remind you that your opinion is no worthy than mine. |
Did I misunderstand you? If so, I apologize. You seemed to be saying all transgender people have sex reassignment surgery. That is not the case. |
