+1 All we ever hear about is how difficult it is to get into VT Engineering - but there are plenty of other very competitive majors at VT that have nothing to do with engineering. It's getting harder and harder to get in every year. |
What would be more useful to know is what SAT/ACT/GPA may be required. |
| Check your school naviance |
| I wasn’t able to find it online. But if you go to VT school specific information sessions and ask they will tell you the cutoff to submit for SAT for the program you want. Could never get UVA or WM to do that but VT will. They will also give you the median SAT etc. if you ask. GPA they aren’t going to be able to answer in a meaningful fashion because high schools vary. |
| Naviance is school specific, right? It seems that more than half of the students in my child's school applied Virginia Tech... |
True. When we were at the session, some parents/students asked and they provided the stats. The hall was packed with people when we visited |
| Yes naviance is school specific |
It's probably because there are a lot of students who really don't have the grades or aptitude for a "tech" school who apply to VT, but don't attempt W&M or UVA. Anecdotally, I have math students every year who tell me they're applying to VT and I'm always surprised because I know they're not going to end up majoring in a technical field unless something changes dramatically about their aptitude for STEM and/or their work habits. |

But again, there are several other colleges at VT that have majors which have nothing to do with "tech". Their liberal arts college is fantastic - and many students prefer it *over* UVA or W&M. |
At UVA and W&M kids don't apply by major. UVA is by college (A&S, Engineering, etc.). Median SATs, etc. are on the SCHEV website and also in common data sets. UVA also has data available by college on its website (applied, accepted, SAT, ACT, GPA). |
Yes, I should have been more specific, to clarify: UVA and WM will not tell you whether to go test optional or not, the cutoff of when it hurts a kid to submit. VT will. To my knowledge VT does not publish specific information regarding scores for each program, to get data on a specific program attend an information session for that program and ask. They will provide the data. Have one kid at UVA and one at VT and the process is very different. |
+1 Completely agree. |
CS it's where it's at. Tech jobs will be around. |
