I think as a general rule many people don’t realize how competitive some programs are to get into at VT in state. Not just VT engineering. The admit rate for something like BIT is substantially lower than the overall in state admit rate for W&M and isn’t much higher than the UVA early action rate. About equal to the UVA early decision offer rate. People might realize this, but reading a lot of posts in VT threads I don’t think many do.
It's probably because there are a lot of students who really don't have the grades or aptitude for a "tech" school who apply to VT, but don't attempt W&M or UVA. Anecdotally, I have math students every year who tell me they're applying to VT and I'm always surprised because I know they're not going to end up majoring in a technical field unless something changes dramatically about their aptitude for STEM and/or their work habits.
But again, there are several other colleges at VT that have majors which have nothing to do with "tech". Their liberal arts college is fantastic - and many students prefer it *over* UVA or W&M.
