DS deferred for engineering- completely bummed. Other friends deferred too. Only one friend got in who had lower scores but first time college family. I have a feeling this will be a soft rejection b/c he’s from a high performing school and a lot of higher stats kids will apply EA as a safety. Oh well - bummed for him.

How on earth would you know what scores other kids have? Sounds like a troll to me.

I'm sure that's the only reason that friend was accepted.

Because they all talk amongst themselves and that’s what DS said. In fact, friend even told him he’s sure that was the only reason he got in ED - but yes, could be lots of other reasons. He might have just been making DS feel better. I’m just noting what the friend group is telling him. 🤷‍♀️

Increasing first gen students at the school is an institutional priority for VT, so it very well could have tipped the balance here.

But you're an adult so you should know better. You have no idea why that child was admitted.

Absolutely. They have a stated goal of 40% URM and first generation.

If you think it is NOT likely that VT is accepting lots of 1st gen students, you have paid no attention for the past 5+ years. They say they want 1st gens every time they open their mouths.

Don't have a kid applying, but reading on CC that a number of kids are being deferred ED and most are accepted EA. Are ED applicants not as strong? Thought Tech was big yield. Isn't EA just an enrollment crapshoot for the school and ED a guarantee? I don't get it.

DS was accepted. None of the rest of his friends got it.

I believe the deferred ED kids are moved to regular decision. Have a freshman ED student there now. Does know deferred ED kids who did get in regular decision and are there now.
