I am a Democrat who is not happy with my local school board either but I cannot in any way support the other side-book bans, pro-voucher/charters at the expense of public education, intense fear mongering. The constant posting by right wing folks on these forums has made it so I would definitely never support them. I am hoping that Democrats get a freaking clue and actually put out sensible/pro academics candidates going forward. And that people with common sense run for local School Boards. School board candidates should be non-partisan and not endorsed by any political party. It's crazy that it isn't the case.

I won't try to argue all of these issues with you, but surely you realize that parents asking for a book to be removed from a government sponsored school library is not the same as book banning. You may be OK giving your child a graphic novel of young boys performing oral sex, which is your right, but you should be able to understand that some people would not want their children given this book at school. If you want it, go to the public library or the book store.

Hey, I thought the approach was you should be able to choose to mask, how about you should be able to choose what you will read?

Are you arguing against a syllabus now?

1) There is a difference between adults and children and the types of choices that they make, and

2) Government REQUIRES kids to be in schools. Having government sanctioned pornography available to young kids, without their parent's consent, is messed up.

Agreed. The PP to you is a troll. Clearly kids may read whatever they want to read at home with their parent's consent, or if they are clever, without it. But, in schools there should be a reasonable standard of keeping books that are the equivalent of X-rated material due to their sexual, profane, or violent content off of the PS book shelves. Books should not be banned based on their religious or political leanings however. If those types of books are assigned to read, then the assigning teacher should have the class discuss both sides of any arguments the book makes to open minds to alternative view points to increase student's critical thinking skills and philosophical awareness. Neither the teacher nor the school should try to side with one viewpoint over another, but should rather facilitate thoughtful conversation and discourse. Granted, that'd be tough to do in today's hyper-digital and sound-bite sensitive world.

Huh? What "government sanctioned pornography?" "X-rated?"

"Nudity" in "Maus?"

Nudity is not equivalent to X-rated. Neither is sex. Neither are swear words or wars, murder, suicide, etc. without context.

X-rated must pass the context "smell" test. That's the point. And again - no one is saying the public library shouldn't have these books, just schools with kids. Anyhow, you know this but are just being difficult. And if you argue - but who will decide? Well, that's why we have government in the first place (hint: to govern) and why we get to vote people in and out every so often.

Pp was probably referring to the images of a person performing a blow job in Gender Queer.

I'm not PP but there is no universe in which something like that is appropriate for school.

Can someone please post the controversial image here? I tried to google it but only articles about the debate about it in school come up.

If it's allowed in schools, surely it's allowed here right? Could anyone post it please?

Interesting point. But I'm sure it needs a NSFW warning?

And yet, the actual School Boards refused to hear excerpts or look at images because there were "children present". But, hey - it's perfectly fine for that material to be in our kids' school libraries! Such utter hypocrites.

Why? If it's considered appropriate (by some) for kids to read, then it doesn't need any kind of warning. Right?

The courts have spoken in Virginia. Hopefully this will deter the overenthusiastic progressive nut-jobs that they cannot trample others’ rights to achieve their goals.

Sorry, Tiger moms, FCPS will find a different way to level the playing field, assuming the decision isn’t overturned on appeal. Consider taking that money you’re spending on test prep and private tutors and move to a less affluent pyramid.
