How long will the shutdown last?

Fml. How are they allowed to go on recess while there isn't a budget

It’s not really their problem. They are being paid and/or are independently wealthy.

Yes, apparently running the country isn't Congress's job anymore. They've ceded it to the president.

Republicans are recognizing that, when all is said and done, a Democrat — any Democrat — will crush Trump in 2020 and that the Senate will be in Democratic control. So all that’s left for them is judges. The longer this nonsense goes on, the fewer judges get nominated and confirmed. This is really the last gasp/death rattle of the white right wing male.

It is the executive’s job to “run” the country on ad ay to day basis. No one cares about the furloughed feds. It’s very sad.

Yes, only judges matter. Nothing else.

I just looked it up. Neither the House nor the Senate will be in session next week.

Can’t the President simply sign the funding bills the House and Senate both passed?

There is no funding bill to sign because the Senate hasn’t passed one this session.

The vote the Senate took expired with the last term. They needed to vote on it again after January 3.

It’s unfrickin believable. They shouldn’t be allowed adjourn like that in this situation. It means nothing can happen for most of the rest of the month.

Mitch will not hold a vote to reopen because he knows it would earn a veto proof majority that would usurp Trump. He will not allow a vote on a bill that opens the government specifically and only because it would earn bipartisan support and thwart Trump. He has let the Senate become an arm of the executive branch, it is no longer a separate leg that serves as a check and balance.

To answer the original question talk to folks in the midwest. Not the farmers. Outside of the beltway very few know the government is shut down.
I grew up in fly over country, you know- the area that choose the president. Yea- folks there are askkmhbof its still shut down, because the don’t know/don’t care. The SOTU is a nothingburger to many of them. The general response was that they were not going to watch it anyway.
Cancelled flights & speeches just do not resonate outside the beltway.

Interesting. My furloughed federal employee relatives in flyover country are very well aware of the shutdown as is their community. They are struggling and heading to food banks - these are not rich people.

My husband’s company is headquartered I’m flyover country and is feeling the sting of the shutdown because they execute contracts for the government that have been stopped - over 1000 people in that company have jobs on the line.

Plenty of people in flyover country care and are getting hurt by this shutdown. It’s a disgrace. All for Trump’s useless vanity project.

That’s not true. The House is in session next week. They were supposed to be out but cancelled their district work period because of the shutdown.

In any case, this is about optics. Leadership negotiates the budget, not the rank and file.
