That's because it actually is a single event. Unless you have information that such events happen routinely in MCPS schools?

Are MCPS schools always safe for everybody all the time? Obviously not. Can MCPS do better? We hope so? What can MCPS do to make it better? That's the question Jack Smith needs to answer.

But the answer will not be. break federal law and violate the US Constitution by throwing out all unauthorized immigrants or children of unauthorized immigrants. And the answer is also not, remove all students who are male and 18 or older from buildings where girls younger than 16 go to school.

The Superintendant has made it clear that he does not thing this is a big deal. It took days for him to even acknowledge the event and then at the meeting, he refers to it as an 'event'.

He is the one who is not even making an effort to address policy issues. Seems to want the whole 'event' to just go away without making any meaningful change. That is why there are calls for him to resign. He has failed our students repeatedly. And is not even willing to own up to that.

Do you feel that Jack Smith's response has been appropriate?

To me, it's his response that's the issue. I don't care about immigration status -- I know Federal law prohibits schools from checking that.

If I was Smith, here's what I would have done:

- Reported this to the public on Thursday afternoon (the day the incident occurred.. suspects were in custody by 1pm), and that the bathroom where this took place has been closed until further notice (it was in a secluded part of the school, and had doors.. the others don't).
- On Friday, issue a statement that he's ordered a top-to-bottom review of security at ALL MCPS schools, and he's convening an independent review or brining in outside consulants on this too.
- Meet with Rockville HS parents on Monday, and stay to answer all theri questions (he left after 15 minutes)
- Show sympathy for the victim

Instead what do we get?
- Rushed out statement on Sunday night after story hits national news
- Press conference on Tuesday
- No meeting with parents until Tuesday

Total utter mismanagement. How do we get him ousted? I know he's not elected, so do we go to the Board of Ed or our Council?

This is exactly how I feel. He has not made enough effort to actually reach out to parents.

And I feel very strongly that if this did not get picked up by more news channels, this would have very quickly been glossed over as an 'unfortunate event'. Versus in reality it is a pretty big deal with many complicated issues to address.

It is all over Conservative media. Rush was just discussing it on-air with Pemce

+1000 that would have the appropriate response. His response screams attempted COVER UP. I'm going to the BoE. He's unethical and a liability.

Is there a list of those on the BoE?

advice from the expert with no children in the system

I have children in public schools and you better believe I'm thinking about pulling out my daughters! Either that or sue to get my tax dollars back!

? If something horrible happens at a private school will you pull your kid out of private? So, where then where will you go? Home school?

Some white men have commited rape; are you going to tell your DD not to marry a white man?

I'm not the PP, but we have a reasonable expectation that we can send our girls (and boys) to school and expect that they will not be RAPED by an 18 year old man in the bathroom.

If this happened and we were at a private school, you can damn well believe that the parents would sue.

I come from a country where women face threats and realize what it does to female society as a whole. If there is the possibility of rape at school, it has an immense effect on girls' educations. It's a great way to keep girls and their parents scared.

This is unacceptable.

This person or people who keep bringing up rapes outside of school grounds simply don't understand the conversation. No one is saying rape doesn't happen. No one is saying rapes don't occur among other races. Stop bringing race or incidents outside of school into this.

This issue is rape on school grounds during school hours. Get it?

I think everyone gets it. The point is - a really horrible thing happened in school, like school shootings. If a white guy in a private school rapes a girl in school, are you going to home school your kid? Fine, you can sue the school, but pulling your kid out of an entire school system because of this horrific incident seems like an over reaction. I think parents should hold the school board accountable, but kids can be hurt at any school, private or public.

Weird thing is that when there is a school shooting, it gets reported on all news outlets, because even though there are political issues about guns, everyone is concerned about children's safety. This tragedy isn't showing up on MSNBC. Sad, and just goes to show the deep complexities of this issue. Makes me wonder what else we don't know about because it isn't convenient to furthering an agenda (left or right).

I doubt it's a single event. First of all most rape victims never report the rape. Also Also, during the meeting two parents stood ups and got in the mic to ask about what the school is going about gangs and both times all of the admin pretended to not know anything about it. The one parent even pulled his daughter out because of the prevalence of gangs. Also when a different parent asked directly if anything else like this has happened as far as sexual assault -the principal never answered the question directly. Not an isolated event. If Smith had it his way, you wouldn't have known about this one either.

I heard if yo uemail them directly (not the general BOE address), they may actually read it.

Also, Ortman-Fouse and O'Reilly are the ones responsible for shutting down the school for "alternative" students a few years ago -- Mark Twain school. They claimed it was to mainstream special ed students (which I think is a good thing) but glossed over how Twain was more for regular kids who had issues or were expelled. Actual special ed students were already being mainstreamed at the time.

Because Smith is clueless. The press knows more than he does about his own schools.

It doesn't say that the "sexual assault" was rape. Principal didn't say "sexual assaults" never happened, just that rape has never occurred. Could it have occurred in previous years and not reported? Sure, but that could be the case in any school.

Groping/grabbing private parts -- what Trump said he did on tape.

Also, rape in a HS by a student has occured in MD before, and in other states:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/05/07/maryland-high-school-rape/8803161/

"Nationally, 4% of students ages 12 to 18 reported being victimized at school in 2011, the most recent year available, according to a report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics. That includes 0.1% who reported serious violent victimization, which the Justice Department defines as rape, sexual assault, robbery and aggravated assault."

Feds were working to deport suspect in rape of girl, 14, in Maryland

http://www.kswo.com/story/34943686/feds-were-working-to-deport-suspect-in-rape-of-girl-14-in-maryland

ROCKVILLE, MD (WJLA/CNN) - Police in Montgomery County, MD, arrested two high school students accused of raping a 14-year-old girl at school.

But prosecutors say immigration enforcement could play a big part in the case.

"These are very serious allegations, carrying a life sentence," said Ramon Korionoff of the Montgomery County state's attorney's office.

Prosecutors assert 18-year-old Henry Sanchez and 17-year-old Jose Montano raped a 14-year-old girl inside Rockville High School. Charging documents stating both teens "pulled" and "pushed" the victim into a boy's bathroom stall, and then sexually assaulted her right beside a toilet.

After the attack, police say Sanchez placed his coat over the girl's head while walking her out of the bathroom as Montano told her to be quiet. "Today they were held without bond," Korionoff said.

In court on Friday, it was learned that ICE was already working to deport Sanchez back to his native Guatemala. He entered the U.S. seven months ago and was living in an Aspen Hill apartment with his father.

Montano, a minor whose mugshot police are not releasing, entered the U.S. from El Salvador last school year. He had been staying along Lincoln Street in Rockville with his uncle.

"The immigration ramifications are determined at a later point by the proper authorities. We just are working very closely with our police and school security partners to ensure this case goes forward in a timely and executed manner,” Korionoff said.

Police say both Montano and Sanchez will be tried as adults.
