Norwood School - K

I don't quite understand this--not being snarky, just seeking clarification. So, if you apply now and they like you, they may give you a space ahead of someone who's already on the wait list? Does this apply just to people with special circumstances (just moved to DC, e.g.), or to anyone?

(Not on the Norwood wait list, btw, so I have no personal stake in this.)

There are a number of reasons why the answer to your question is yes, some late applicants will get a slot before those already on the waitlist. Sometimes the waitlist is a soft rejection, so those on the waitlist aren't really "desirable" for admission. Also in a waitlist situation, there isn't necessarily an order (i.e., "space ahead of someone who's already on the waitlist"). Sometimes schools don't yield the number of enrollments that they'd like after families have submitted their contracts and the dust has settled. Sometimes schools still seek applicants for grades that aren't necessarily an entry year to cover slots that become open due to attrition.

Some people seem to only have applied to the "big three or four" where the pool may be extremely competitive. If they have no choices for next year, they may want to widen their net and look for smaller or non-"big three or four" schools where they may have better odds. Some of these other schools may now know that they have a few more spaces for really wonderful children.

Seems unfair to me. I think if the school wasn't "worthy" enough to apply to on time, then you shouldn't be considered unless there are really special circumstances.

I would encourage people to call admissions offices and just ask if they are accepting late applications. I think that there are so many different factors in play at any time. What is the worst thing that can happen - you might get a polite "no we are all set but apply next year" or you might get an invitation to apply because there is some space due to a family suddenly moving or whatever. I think it would be worth a shot.

We made calls to Norwood, Green Acres, Sheridan, St. Patricks and Lowell. All are fully enrolled for K.

VA schools are too far.

We were waitlisted at GDS, Maret and Beauvoir. Rejected at Sidwell.

Any other ideas for schools that may still have K openings?

what about the river school? really hard to get in to for the younger years, but i don't think it's as popular for starting in k so maybe they'd have a spot (esp if an unexpected number of K students have applied out) - it goes through 3rd grade & is a great school

Concord Hill? British School? Aidan?

I am not sure who you spoke to but Norwood IS accepting late applicants for K. Call their admission office, 301-841-2130.

No kidding! Will call now. Thanks!!! We called on Monday - maybe things opened up since.

Concord hill and Aidan are too structured.

Thanks for the leads on River and British School. I keep hearing more about the British School too.

Thanks everyone.
