Regarding Norwood, yes there are 2 full-time kindergarten teachers per homeroom. They are there all day, every day. They are all full-time teachers, none of them are aides. So yes the ratio is 1 teacher to 9 children.

I heard that they are not in attendance all day, they switch off. So it's is 18 kids per teacher except for reading and math and one other subject.
I have read that this switching off completely wipes out the benefits of small class size. |
| Re: 18:13 post, does anyone know, I'd like to know too? |
Hi I'm the person/OP who started the "Small Class Size?" thread a while back. My gut is telling me that the switch off/pull out separate groups/move here, there, everywhere all day long is not doing the kids any favors. But I have not read any research on this specific practice. Can you point me to some? |
| Pulling out separate groups is not necessarily a bad thing. Many schools use this approach to offer differentiated instruction. |
This is what I want to know, and it will determine what school we use. I do know that the research says that TA's do NOT help change outcome. I will look at that issue and get back if I get an answer. PP I liked your class size post. Glad to know that other parents are concerned. |
| As a current K parent at Norwood I know for a fact that yes, it is two full time teachers per class of 18. They do not "trade-off". |
| That's interesting, b/c an administrator told me that they do. Can you clarify this? |
|
For the person who has "heard" all these things about Norwood, you should speak to a parent from the school, call, or go to the school to get your information. Do not rely on an anonymous board to find out reliable information about ANY school.
No Norwood administrator would say that the Kindergarten teachers trade off because they don't. Norwood Kindergarten has two full-time teachers per homeroom (16-19 students) all day every day. The children are then divided into six groups for reading (making groups of 8-12 children per group) and five groups for math (making groups of 10-14). All these numbers and information are given on the school tour. Norwood is very conscientious about appropriate grouping sizes and pedagogy for young children. They are also very upfront about curriculum and school information when current parents or prospective parents are interested. |
| I have never heard Norwood or its administrators or on the tours mention 19 kids in K classes, I have heard 16-17, and some mention on these board being perhaps 18, what is it this year? |
| 15:01, I have also heard that the two teachers are not in full attendance all day. I spoke to many parents, and when I asked that question, many did not know for sure. |
| As a current K Norwood parent, yes the 2 teachers are in the room all day in full-attendance. This year there are 54 children in K, 3 homerooms of 18 children each. There are 26 girls and 28 boys. |
| You might want to call the River School and call back any other school you applied to this year (sometimes the wait list changes in late June). |
I am a current Norwood parent too and there are 2 teachers in each K classroom. It is team teaching which sometimes is a give and take with both teachers and sometimes one teacher takes the lead. I also want to weigh in on the class size and emphasize that my Kchild is in a much smaller group for reading and math. |
| Our local public school in Alexandria, VA has three kindergarten classes, 17 kids per class, each with a teacher and full time teacher's assistant.... |
