WaPo: Virginia will block schools from accommodating transgender students

Anonymous
This is shocking!

“ a major rollback of LGBTQ rights, the administration of Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) will require that transgender students in Virginia access school facilities and programs that match the sex they were assigned at birth and is making it more difficult for students to change their names and genders at school.
Under new “model policies” for schools’ treatment of transgender students released Friday evening, the Department of Education is requiring that families submit legal documentation to earn their children the right to change names and genders at school. The guidelines also say teachers cannot be compelled to refer to transgender students by their names and genders if it goes against “their constitutionally protected” free speech rights.
And the guidelines say schools cannot “encourage or instruct teachers to conceal material information about a student from the student’s parent, including information related to gender” — raising the prospect that teachers could be forced to out transgender students to their parents.
School districts must adopt the new state guidelines or “policies that are more comprehensive,” after a 30-day comment period that will begin on Sept. 26”

This is a tragedy. When the GA is back in session we need to show up in full force and tell them how we feel.

In the mean time e-mail your school board reps (CC your superintendent and your local news if you’re willing) and tell them that you DO NOT support having these policies instituted in your district

Youngkin is a race-baiter. In Virginia, home of Brown vs Board of Education. Anyone who likes his “education initiatives” should be ashamed of themselves.

The cruelty is the point.

This thread was first and covers all VA schools, not one school district.

This is great. It puts it in the hands of the parents.

This is very politically popular with parents too, except the farthest left 25% of the political spectrum. See the polling on DeSantis' bill in Florida.

+1. They’re welcome to fire me and replace me with one of the many experienced or even inexperienced special ed teachers who are salivating to snatch up my job. What a joke. I’ll call my students by the name they prefer. The parents who don’t like it are welcome to pay for a conservative private school or homeschool.

I'm a parent. I had a friend in college whose parents abused him for being gay. School was his refuge and rhe only way he survived. Youngkin is removing that refuge and will definitely drive more kids to suicide.

It says teachers are allowed to misgender and deadname children. We parents can’t change that.

And spare me the legal documentation BS. Here are the steps to change gender and name in Virginia. Before we could just ask the school. Why should we have to navigate all this bureaucratic red tape just so our kids can not have to deal with this BS?
