Youngkin will block schools from accommodating transgender students

Omg. How will FCPS respond to this madness?

“In a major rollback of LGBTQ rights, the administration of Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) will require that transgender students in Virginia access school facilities and programs that match the sex they were assigned at birth and is making it more difficult for students to change their names and genders at school.
Under new “model policies” for schools’ treatment of transgender students released Friday evening, the Department of Education is requiring that families submit legal documentation to earn their children the right to change names and genders at school. The guidelines also say teachers cannot be compelled to refer to transgender students by their names and genders if it goes against “their constitutionally protected” free speech rights.
And the guidelines say schools cannot “encourage or instruct teachers to conceal material information about a student from the student’s parent, including information related to gender” — raising the prospect that teachers could be forced to out transgender students to their parents.
School districts must adopt the new state guidelines or “policies that are more comprehensive,” after a 30-day comment period that will begin on Sept. 26“

By not keeping gender and name changes secret from student parents? Just a thought.

“The 2022 model policy posted today delivers on the governor’s commitment to preserving parental rights and upholding the dignity and respect of all public school students,” Youngkin spokesperson Macaulay Porter said in a statement.

Dignity and respect! In the form of being misgendered by teachers.

I wonder how many youth suicides this will cause.

Disgusting.

He is just awful. There are so many statistics about the danger many of these kids are in from their parents and others, and from suicide. And Youngkin wants to make sure these kids are in danger.

Can you cite these statistics?

I wonder if it’s a coincidence that this came out exactly at the same time as WPATHs updated standard of care recommendations which (among other changes) recommend getting the state involved if there is extended transphobia at home. The timing seems oddly coincidental to me.

The same guidelines with recommendations for castrating individuals who identify as eunuchs? You don’t think that maybe WPATH has lost the plot this time?

This is horrifying. We took two steps forward with Northam, and we’ve now taken 10000 back with Youngkin. My heart breaks for these young people.

Republicans really like thinking about children’s genitals.

It is true that transgender youth are more likely to commit suicide. Considering that dysmorphia is often enough comorbid with a bunch of other stuff, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21671938/, causality is far from clear. BTW do you really think the Trevor project came into this analysis trying to find the answer, in a spirit of scientific inquiry? Or maybe do you think you should interpret their study through the lens of understanding they are advocates for a position.

This "but they'll commit suicide" argument -- maybe it's true, but the evidence is not speaking loudly, if at all. Could even be the other way, that encouraging transitions leads to more suicides. Given the lack of careful causal analysis in this literature, we'll probably never know. That argument certainly does grab attention though.

BTW do you think people really "want these kids to be in danger"? I expect most believe (rightly) that gender dysmorphia is mostly a fad and that a return to common sense in the schools will do more good than harm for kids. I think you're turning your opponents into monsters to make yourself feel more righteous. They're not.

I can’t say whether WPATH has lost the plot or not. But I find the timing suspect.
