I'm going to wager that a good chunk of the school board right now is red. And I don't mean GOP

Hope Louise Epstein runs in 2023. Have good memories of her.

Right now I'd vote for anyone other than Tholen but it's always possible the Republicans could find someone worse to endorse.

A lot of my Republican friends thought along these lines and voted for Youngkin. Most are crying now (at least publicly). I suspect any Republican elected will end up "toeing the Trump line". Unfortunate, but true. Youngkin had the opportunity to prove he is "not one of them" but it's pretty clear that he is.

Highly doubt your friends “exist” or are representative of republicans in Virginia overall. Youngkins approval rating as of now is about the same as is margain of victory in November.

I'm beyond tired of Democrats looking to deflect from the incredibly poor performance of local Democratic officials in Fairfax by bringing up Trump. It didn't work for McAuliffe and it won't work for Bryan Graham and the FCDC in 2023. At a minimum you should be looking for a graceful exit for the majority of the current members, including but not limited to Omeish, Tholen and Frisch, and looking for a new slate.

Everyone knows that republicans are racist and democrats don’t have racist friends, right?

Who wad “kicked out?”

So are you implying that it is ok to kick out only one neighborhood? How about if it was just your neighborhood?

And if you think that people in Shouse wanted to get kicked out, you are wrong. You must have watched the last SB meeting before the morning that Elaine flipped and went against the staff recommendation - that meeting was focused on other neighborhoods who for the most part were resisting the switch to LHS. If you had watched SB the meeting before that you would have seen a significant majority of people, including kids, advocating to not rip our neighborhood out of MHS. Or at least to do it starting at the K level. You may be confused, understandably so, because Elaine was so manipulative during this process, saying different things to different groups.

To clarify - my family did not volunteer to take one for the team - that is a stupid thing to say. And to insinuate that everyone was ok with Elaine's folly is disrespectful and ignorant. I didnt oppose the boundary change, but I remain so appalled at how it was done.

But what do you care, since it wasn't your neighborhood, right?

And in the end, dont forget that this disruption and new stress was imposed on kids during the pandemic AND IT DID NO GOOD. Maybe 40 less kids at MHS this year? So it was all for naught.

Please dont make excuses. This was sooo poorly done. And we wont forget it.

An expanded McLean means the school community gets to stay together comfortably.

You are so wrong: the McLean "Community" was already ripped apart through the boundary change. Elaine, mcspaces, and McLean parents kicked kids out of the "Community." Please acknowledge that.

DP, but do you realize that Langley had been losing kids for the better part of a decade, to the extent that VHSL proposed to drop Langley from Class 6 to Class 5 (TJ and Lewis are the only FCPS high schools in Class 5 based on their lower enrollments) and Langley had to petition VHSL to remain in Class 6?

And that, despite this, Jeff Platenberg went ahead and expanded Langley during its renovation more than originally planned to 2370 seats?

So I’m wondering why you think the same School Board that had been ignoring McLean parents for years was suddenly going to defer to their preferences if they held out in unison for an addition and no boundary change in 2019. The fix had been in for years to move kids and Tholen was more than happy to do her part to make Platenberg look better. Since McLean’s enrollment is already higher than ever this year, it’s obvious which school benefitted from her actions and which one keeps getting screwed.

The boundary change made zero difference in MHS. That is why everyone, including MHS parents, vance and mcspaces, and Elaine, should have opposed it. Instead everyone pushed the boundary change as if it was 1) going to help 2) needed to be done before a reno. None of that was true and EVERYONE knew it. So WHY did MHS parents, vance and mcspaces push it? Because Elaine duped all of you.

Spot on. And the overcrowding at McLean is down right dangerous. Thank Tholen for that.

She is not alone. Do not forget:

Jeff Platenberg, who reneged on FCPS's plans to build an addition at MHS (as conveyed by Janie Strauss to MHS parents in early 2015) because he decided it would make his life easier to just add seats that weren't originally planned or needed at Langley during its renovation.

Janie Strauss, who then didn't object or call Platenberg out when Facilities did something different than what she'd previously heard (and told McLean parents).

Karen Keys Gamarra, Karen Corbett Sanders, and other School Board members, who sat on Strauss's requests in 2018 and 2019 for a boundary study because they claimed there needed to be a county-wide boundary review (which never happened) through an "equity-based lens" (thus postponing any relief at MHS for years).

And, of course, there's Tholen, who pushed through a boundary change that is not equitable or effective, and who has failed to live up to her campaign promises to fight hard to secure funding for a permanent addition to McLean, even as the school's enrollment this year is at an all-time high.

The Democrats often claim that anyone who criticizes FCPS or the School Board must be from some "astro-turfed" organization backed by the Koch Brothers, but the sad truth is that locals have had to watch this debacle unfold year after year, due to the negligence of public employees and elected officials who are, by turn, incompetent, obstructive, and utterly hypocritical.

I love what you wrote.

Agree with other posters on platenberg. He is a bumbling fool and needs to go.

Id add Douglas Tyson to that list as well. He is an arrogant idiot.

Hopefully braband takes them with him when he finally leaves.
