The NNAT from 1st will be used unless they do not have that on file.
Doubt that they will just use the NNAT it is the least of the criteria for placement. I've heard from a few teachers that they are changing the system for admissions into AAP. I can see them postponing placement for 1 year.

lol. So all the third grade AAP teachers next year who have spent time training and developing their materials for years will suddenly revert back to the normal curriculum and totally redevelop their materials for a gen ed audience? Sure, sure that's what will happen. Keep dreaming.

Not to mention the center schools will have an empty 3rd grade classroom. I guess the third grade center teachers will just collect unemployment for a year
Same number of teachers will be needed, they will just move to a different school. The total number of students would not change.

They wouldn't run these classes if they were not profitable. And they are but one tutoring center. There is no way of knowing how many people are sending kids to these types of centers but there are more than enough options out there that make me think it is a decent percentage of the population. Grocery stores have NNAT and CogAT prep books for sale, I have seen them at multiple H Mart and Lotte locations.

So yes, there is a good amount of prepping. This is not exactly hidden.

It is theorized that it is one of the reasons that the test scores have become less important in the process.

Profitable does not equal effective

Effective enough that parents are willing to spend the money. If there were not enough kids being accepted into AAP or TJ, parents would stop using these centers.

No they wouldn't. You realize that research shows all that baby einstein crap and educational toys do nothing to improve the intelligence of toddlers and young children and yet parents spend tons of money on those toys too, right? Did you also realize that numerous research studies have been unable to show a positive effect of top quality preschools for more than a year or two after attendance (in other words, if your kid goes to a cadillac preschool, any minor positive effects have worn off by 1-2 years later)? I know this because I spent years doing marketing for an early childhood education company. So please don't confuse parents spending money on things with the idea that these things have a benefit. People are incredibly bad at discerning cause and effect and disentangling it from the passage of time, especially when there sample size consists of their one or two children in its entirety.

You then also realize those same studies show that any closure of “the gap” by Head Start/low income preschool programs is also lost by 2nd or 3rd grade. The biggest correlating factor with educational success is the highest degree obtained by the child’s mother. Turns out all the “equity” programs have a super high price tag and very little effect.
Some of the drop is because of our overly long summer vacations. Having two weeks between each quarter and 4-6 week summer vacations would do quite a bit to change it.

I think skipping AAP placement for one year would make the most sense. Otherwise, we will end up with a bloated AAP for one year just like the last time we had a problem.

I’m starting to understand. The commute would be murder but I could own a horse farm out there for what I pay to live in FCPS. Now that I telework full-time it’s incredibly appealing.

PP here. I live 10 minutes north of Reston Town Center. The downtown commute is brutal, but places like Tyson’s, Reston, Chantilly and Herndon are fine.

NP but we're planning on moving here after my older child finishes 2nd grade (this year) mainly because we think AAP is horseshit.

PP here. My neighbor is an AART in FCPS and she deliberately chose LCPS for her kids because of the AAP craziness. I think you will be happy with your decision. We also have the best start times. 7:50 ES/8:30 MS/9:15 HS.

Yikes! 7:50 for elem sounds god awful!

It sounds awesome, as my kids wake up at 6 every day. Don't kids wake up later as they go from preschool to upper elementaryto middleschool? Plus it's very compatible with a dual income family's work schedule. If I drop off my ES kid at 9:20am, I don't get to work until 10:15. So I pay for SACC before care (pre covid). So do many other parents who use the SACC before care.

The 8am PP clearly doesn’t work. Most functioning adults aren’t horrified by having to wake up (or wake their kids up) before 8am.

DS is up between 6 and 6:30 every day. He would be fine with an 8 AM start. His school starts at 8:30 so it wouldn’t be that much of a change for him.

I feel bad your kids get up so early. Between 6 and 6:30 am is not normal, sorry.

AAP will not be delayed by a year, sorry. Dumbest idea ever.

It’s way more normal than sleeping until 8. You probably keep them up way too late. Early bedtime and early wake time is most developmentally appropriate. Read any sleep book. But anyway you seem psycho so PLEASE do not move to LCPS. Fairfax can have you.

He goes to bed to read at 8, Lights out at 8:30. He gets about 9 hours of sleep, a but more some days. Pretty much what is recommended. He reads from when he wakes up until 7.

Enough people have said their kids wake up that early, that it seems like it probably is normal. Wake up time also depends on when your kids go to bed. My second grader is in bed by 8:00 and wakes up between 6:30 - 7:00. I assume your kids go to bed late.

Nice try. The only one who is coming across as psychotic is you. But that’s to be expected given your kids are waking up so early! Even if they wake that early, don’t you have a family rule about staying in rooms until a more reasonable hour? It’s one thing if your kid is a toddler, but an older school age child should be trained to not get out of his or room that freaking early. Have them read or pay quietly in rooms until 7:30 or something!

And no, I don’t keep my kids up late at all. They go to bed by 8:30-9:00 pm and are up now between 8:00 - 8:30 am. Much more reasonable and we don’t have to stress out getting to bed early for a 7:50 am start time at school. No thank you to LCPS!

Have you ever had a paying job in your life?

NP but it is super weird that you are so up in arms and defensive about this. Who cares what time other people's kids wake up?

We're all early risers in my family and are happy that way. My kid's 9:20 - 4:00 school day made her miserable. She'd be much happier with 8:00 - 2:45.

I don’t care at all. I had made one comment about how I wouldn’t enjoy the early start times in LCPS earlier. And then I was jumped on and told I must keep my kids up late and that I was psycho. And that I was asked if I had ever had a paying job. Please go back and reread the posts. If anything, it’s the PP who is defensive about the early start times in LCPS and insulting anyone who disagrees.
