Sounds like some churches might open for Easter:
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/some-defiant-us-churches-plan-easter-services-ignoring-public-health-guidelines/ar-BB12qGLw "Satan and a virus will not stop us," said the Reverend Tony Spell, 42, pastor of the evangelical Life Tabernacle Church near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He expects a crowd of more than 2,000 to gather in worship at his megachurch on Sunday. "God will shield us from all harm and sickness," Spell said in an interview. "We are not afraid. We are called by God to stand against the Antichrist creeping into America's borders. We will spread the Gospel." In Idaho, Ammon Bundy, who has led multiple standoffs against authorities in acts of protest against the federal government, plans to gather hundreds of people for an Easter observance, in defiance of public health advice, according to multiple media reports. Another holdout church, the evangelical Cross Culture Center in Lodi, California, about 70 miles (110 km) southwest of San Francisco, plans another service even after its members found their church doors locked against them last weekend. |
| My idiotic mom would go if her church would let her. She would say if it’s God’s will for her to get it, then she will. Thankfully, smarter people are in charge of these things. |
Hey racist/anti-semite not the OP but yes they should stay home too. What makes you think OP thinks differently? |
| Good grief NO!! |
|
Watched the Stations of the Cross video with my children today online. Now will listen to Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion.
Will follow our Church service online on Sunday. |
OP states that all synagogues are closed, and all Jews are staying home. When it's pointed out that that isn't true, that some fringe segments aren't making safe choices, she distsnces herself from them. But then she associates mainstream Christian denominations with equally fringe Christian groups. In reality there are extremists in both religions who are ignoring the stay at home orders, and in both groups they're tiny minorities. I'm sure that when Ramadan arrives, we'll see some extremists making bad choices there too. In none of the situations, should the behavior of the minority be used to judge the majority. |
Wrong. I am Christian but not Catholic and what I took away from the original OP was that she was singling out Catholics, which spoke volumes to me. I am glad she eventually apologized and hope she realizes that singling out the Pope when Google could have easily told her it is the southern Evangelicals that seem to be ignoring public health concerns are really the issue, suggested she had an ax to grind. Again, I'm not Catholic so don't even think to call me a "bad Catholic". I'm also not a bad Christian for having my opinion. I am extending grace to OP as others have done for me on several occasions, especially relevant on this holiest of days. |
Well this is a surprise! Bolded pp was responding to me, not to the pp who answered. I had decided not to argue with the troll. But I agree with the pp who answered, about OP having an ugly axe to grind, and I’m not Catholic either, so it’s all good. FWIW, I think part of OP’s problem is that she put a face on anti-Catholic bigotry. So often we think it’s just trolls like the stupid smily-face poster, and we don’t think they’re worth our time. But OP stood up and said, hey, I’m Jewish and not otherwise a troll, and I’m going to ignore the feckless folk in my own faith and instead single out Catholics and the Pope. |
OP here. I've said already that the Orthodox Jews should be ashamed of themselves if they don't stay home. This question was specifically about Easter. Do you plan to stay home? |

"FWIW, I think part of OP’s problem is that she put a face on anti-Catholic bigotry. So often we think it’s just trolls like the stupid smily-face poster, and we don’t think they’re worth our time. Again, I posted that the Orthodox Jews should be ashamed of themselves if they don't stay home. I apologized for being wrong about the Pope. My question was derived from the news articles about churches that have remained open. I know they aren't Catholic Churches, but I simply suggested the Pope--as an authority for millions of people--should issue guidance. I'm glad he did. That's really it. |
The pope is only an authority for Catholics. Protestant, Orthodox, and other "quasi-Christian sects" (e.g. Mormon) do not consider him their leader. Evangelicals are the ones still holding services this Easter. Maybe because evangelical denominations are more independent than Catholics, non-evangelical protestants, etc. For most you dont need a degree to become a pastor just a calling. |
OK, but google really should have been your friend before you posted. The Catholic Church issued guidance as early as March 20, 2020, about how Easter is to be celebrated. |
Yes, I'm aware of that. Also, you call me intolerant, but then turn around and call Mormons "quasi-Christian." I think they certainly consider themselves Christian. |
I've apologized several times. What more do you want? |
You are right. Happy Pesach. |
