This information was just broadcast on MSNBC. They interviewed two passengers on the ship who said they went on the cruise because Florida's governor said "people should go on with their lives" and President Trump said, "This will be over soon" (paraphrasing the interview content).

Tell me why we are bailing out the cruise industry again?

We aren't. Check the news reports like Wash Po. Because major cruise lines aren't headquartered in the US, they will not qualify.

Correct. “Despite Donald Trump’s repeated vows to bail out the cruise ship industry, money for cruise companies was not a part of the $500bn in aid for large employers included in stimulus bill passed by Congress on Wednesday.

Most of the major cruise operators register their companies in countries such as Panama and Liberia, thereby avoiding most US taxes and labor laws. Thus, the cruise industry’s trade group said on Thursday the companies will not have access to the US aid for large employers, according to the Washington Post.”

More here - there are at least ten ships with around 10,000 passengers stranded at sea right now. It’s totally wrong for the ports of origin to refuse to take these ships back IMO.

Not true. I cancelled a February trip to Vegas because of the coronavirus. I knew that between the handles on the slot machines, crowded casinos, and open buffets, and high concentration of Chinese tourist I had a good chance of catching the virus. And yes I lost money on my vacation package. It’s been in the news since January, but it was really in the news in February when that Diamond Cruise ship was stranded in Japan. People chose to ignore what was there to be seen.

I agree that the points of origin should be responsible for accepting the ships back.

This purposeful ignorance and/or blatant lying drives me insane.

I have a friend on that ship. She went because at the time, there was no warning not to. She felt it would be fine, given that they were staying in South America, and that seemed far from trouble.

I thought she was mad to go.

This. And even though it sailed on March 7, many flew down there March 4-6.

We have to remember that the average IQ is not that high and that half the population has a below average IQ. One of the characteristics of low-average intelligence is less critical thinking. People tend to think more concretely and are more likely to hear something and believe it to be true - versus analyzing, dissecting and using higher order thinking.

They don't necessarily do research or look for scientific evidence or seek out multiple perspectives to better understand the decision they are making. They are less likely to question information someone who puts themselves forward as an expert or an authority figure gives.

Half the population is like this - if not more. That is why wrong information is so scary - many people will just take it as truth.

While I agree that context helps, there are many people pushing the idea that only older patients and patients with health issues are getting seriously ill. Be careful not to confuse context with complacency.

While age and health issues definitely create higher risk for more serious infection and death, it is misleading to keep saying, as many posters here and as some news outlets do, that younger people and healthy people don't die from this virus. Are the risks lower? Yes. We should note that. But I'm still seeng so many "you're fine if you're young and healthy, it'll be like a cold" posts in different DCUM forums that it seems there's quite a myth out there that this isn't a big deal for everyone.

See parallel thread about a few day’s getaway for a birthday celebration. Just stay home.

This is my parents. They get all their news from FOX.

Nope, sorry. The Diamond Princess in Japan was in early Feb. Everyone on the current ship had more than fair warning. Their vacation was more important than their life.

Agreed, someone has to man up and take these people in. The original destination is the most logical place. Yes, it is an inconvenient obligation, but we can't leave fellow people adrift and at risk, as we did during WW2/the holocaust! That is immoral

The companies can't have it both ways. If you don't want to pay into US coffers (taxes=social responsibility) then you can't expect the US to use our tax dollars to bail you out. Chickens coming home to roost.
