You have to stop caring.
We are also all self-made. I would've loved a trust fund . I joke with my dad that he should have worked harder.
That said--your kids seeing how hard you work will hopefully rub off and make them hard workers as well. My sticking point used to be my neighbors that bought their houses pre-2002 for $350k and are now worth $1.5million...esp because we were in position to buy in this neighborhood but didn't like it back then. They barely work since the mortgage is almost non-existent. Oh well. Mine is more for 'kicking myself' in the a**. My friends that have family $ are incredibly down-to-earth so I don't begrudge them their fortune. |
| Didn't read all the posts but I always wonder what happens to the kids of these adults. Do they have any money left to set up their own kids in their lifestyle? Or once their kid is an adult do they just say sorry kid we didn't want to save anything for you and besided we need to continue to mooch off parents to fund our retirement? |
+1 or Junior wastes it all because he doesn't know the value of money. |
|
Did not read all 7 prior pages of this but just want to add that this may get be prudent estate planning on the part of all these grandparents.
As long as the kids are not totally freeloading, I have no problem with this transfer of wealth. The grandparents cant take it with them so why no spend it now instead of waiting until they are dead and having Uncle Sam take a big chunk out in the form of estate taxes. |
| My cousin hasn't worked in ten years and lives off family money. But a fool and his money are soon parted and he is blowing it already. |
Nanny here whose parents helped out- I agree that is might be a cultural thing. My parents aren't from the US and this is the way that it has always been done where they come from. The generation before helps the next generation, to give you a start in life. |
Why? Just out of curiosity, why the hostility? |
Was this to me or the person who replied to this with profanity? |
Who cares how much money a person makes. $750K is still excessive. There are homes for much cheaper with just as much room, I'm sure. But some of you love throwing around price tags, which is really tacky. So while I'm not echoing FUCK U's sentiment - exactly - I do wonder why you're so defensive regarding your working ass and your home purchase. If you were confident and secure in your decision, you wouldn't be posting about your working ass b/c you would MYOB. Maybe FUCK U had a point, after all. hmmmmm |

The bitter are really obvious. REALLY obvious. NP here. You need to reel it in and look at yourself instead of begrudging others for their real or perceived fortune.
Grow up. Just curious PP's who cite other cultures. What cultures do you refer to? I am curious, as you seem generous More power to you, I say.
|
YOU, as in you're from the trailer park boasting about your given 750k house. P.S. FUCK U |
Agreed. OP, you are a miserable, judgmental person. People have different lots in life. You'll never know another's situation, so try to take a look in the mirror and stop judging. Has the response to this thread made you look at yourself any differently? Or are you still scrounging through neighbors' trash to see how much their paychecks are? |
Wow....just wow. Are you really that insecure that you feel the need to curse at a person b/c they make an off hand comment about the value of their home? Hell, $750k isn't even that much by DCUM standards. I'm a NP by the way. |
Um, what? $750,000 is not much for a house. That's what it's worth now, not what we paid for it. i'm posting anonymously, I do MYOB. |
You totally misunderstand me. Hard work and financial success make me seem defensive? (?) |
