Countries that are dictatorships are usually quite safe. I’ve lived in several. However, they’re not so great on the human rights front. El Salvador is no exception.

Human rights should mean that potential innocent victims do not have to live in fear of violent criminals committing crimes repeatedly..

Trying to lock the third world out by turning the US into a third world country, brilliant. When things get desperate the homegrown violence will be worse than this fantasy immigrant violence, what with all the gun toting trailer trash with no concept of work.

Blah. Blah. Blah. I know. You care more about criminals than victims.

Pros and cons to freedom. I’d rather people overstay their visa than live in a police state.

I'd rather live where people know better than to break laws. Law-abiding, hardworking citizens who don't break laws will be fine.

oh really. Tell that to a black man who gets pulled over and roughed up.

I bet you've broken laws.. parking, speeding, etc.. You just want to pick and choose which laws *you* think should be followed.

Like following immigration law?

The article said that she had an active asylum case pending and a legal work permit.

Also what a mom… in the midst of that awful and terrifying situation, she was calm and kept trying to reassure her scared daughter.

I hate what our country is doing to immigrants right now. They make our country what it is and our country is NOT going after criminals. They are going after all immigrants (except Elon and Melania).

It's well known that starting an asylum case that will drag on for years due to a backlog is a good way to get a work permit. Most do not qualify for asylum. The article also states that she is a known member of a gang.

You conveniently left out this sentence that follows the claim that she’s a gang member. “Her attorney says the government has not presented any evidence of any gang affiliation. She says it also hasn't presented any information detailing why she was arrested.”

No one objects to the government removing actual gang members, but they’re removing people with no evidence of gang membership and no due process. And that’s a problem for everyone in this country, citizen or not.

It was left out because of course her attorney would say that. It's kind of her job.

Remember way back when everyone was melting down because that transplant doctor was denied re entry into the country only to find out later that she was posing for pictures with terrorists? So you think that this 51 year old lady was just being picked up for nothing? Of all the people here illegally, that's who they chose?

Yes, yes I do think it's quite possible that this woman--and many others--are being picked up by ICE on ZERO, bogus, or flimsy evidence. The Turkish student who was abducted off the street outside Boston is still in a Louisiana prison. She was picked up for co-authoring an op-ed in her college paper that was pro-Palestinian. I'd be happy to link it if you'd like to see it for yourself. It was not "radical" in any way. Regarding the Venezuelans sent to El Salvador:

"Many Venezuelans deported to El Salvador have been found to have no criminal record in the United States, despite being deported as alleged members of gangs. Reports from CBS News, Bloomberg, and Cristosal, a human rights defense NGO, have found that a significant portion of the deportees, ranging from 75% to 90%, lacked criminal records. Human Rights Watch also noted that many of the deportees had no criminal history in Venezuela or other Latin American countries."

Furthermore, I have ZERO confidence in this specific government to follow due process and present evidence of actual wrongdoing.

Louder for those in the back pretending not to hear or who are listening. The greater majority of people have no criminal record.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/what-records-show-about-migrants-sent-to-salvadoran-prison-60-minutes-transcript/

Government officials are even able to defend this in court. And they are paying El Salvador.

This is nothing more than the government trying to control the people and eliminate any dissent. Do realize that one day they will come from you too

Did you even read the article? The woman in this story had legal status.

She entered illegally but “In February 2017, Berrios was released from custody under the ICE Alternatives to Detention Program. The program allows migrants to continue living in the U.S. as they move forward with immigration court proceedings.

Her attorney says her removal proceeding was dropped in 2023, and Berrios filed an affirmative asylum application, which is still pending now. She also has retained an employment authorization card, allowing her to work while her application is reviewed.”

I can't believe it. Watch the video. It's heartbreaking. Horrifying.

I don't speak much Spanish, but it appears they didn't have a judicial warrant.

OMG. This is our country????

I'm sure you'd all be cheering if it were a grandma who had walked into the Capitol Building being terrorized by the FBI.

She refused to obey the orders of law enforcement and found out. When law enforcement tells you to get out of the car, there is no Constitutional right to refuse to obey them and sit in your car thinking your magic window shields you from following the instructions of law enforcement. She found out.

Not true. ICE does not have the same power as the police.

They need a warrant signed by a judge and not one of their fake pretend warrants.

You do not need a warrant to search a vehicle.

Yes, you do need a warrant or direct probably cause: https://triallawyersmaryland.com/when-are-police-allowed-to-search-your-car-in-maryland/

This is the problem with phony asylum status that Biden made up for backdoor immigration. She was undocumented then got caught, but then convientlty used the asylum status to stay. No that it's been determined those status is phoney and rescinded she needs to go back. Why are people so shocked when asylum ends but not when by a wave a magic wand it was created, it can be removed the same get over it.

Ok, 2 issues here:

1. They do not need a warrant to pull her over. IF they need probable cause, the car being driven by a known illegal citizen is enough. Once pulled over she must legally exit the car if ordered to do so. She did not.

2. Her car was not searched, so it’s a moot point. That being said, as above, you have probable cause to search because it’s currently being used in the commission of a crime, no warrant needed.

That “phony asylum system” was created by congress and has been the law of the land for decades. It needs to be changed by congress. You can’t blame desperate people for using existing rules to stay in the country. The point still stands that at the time of the encounter with iCE agents in the video, she was legally here and had work authorization, whether you like it or not. We are a country of laws.

Then why are you giving her a pass on ignoring the lawful order to get out of the car?

Because the legality of that order is in dispute. ICE claims they didn't need a warrant for a public arrest, but Berrios's attorney argues her rights were violated without showing one.

As pointed out, you do not need a warrant to pull over a car, and once pulled over you do not have the right to disobey an order to get out of the vehicle. There is zero need for a warrant to remove her from the car.

Pulling a car over is still considered a detention subject to the 4th ammendment. You do need probable cause of a crime or primary driving offense to pull over a car. What was the reason for the traffic stop?

That actually is not correct. You need a primary offense to be pulled over. Immigration status itself isn’t such a thing. It’s not sufficient reason to conduct a Terry stop. She isn’t an illegal citizen either. You can’t be an illegal citizen. That’s not a term. You clearly have no expertise or knowledge
