Find a way out. |
The question is also when can you still leave with all your assets, ie will there be a 90% exit tax a la Germany in the 30s? |
Such as? |
Apply for asylum abroad |
This entire thread is full of hysterical people saying that facism is here and we should flee. |
This is one of the stupidest things I have ever read on this site. No country is going to accept asylum seekers from the US. |
What do you do for a living? How much is your house worth? How much money do you have in the bank? Were any of your grand parents or great grandparents born abroad? Are you Jewish? I mean give us something and I'll give you some ideas. |
First I think the Hitler comparison throws people off because he is the most well known and most extreme of authoritarians, but there are plenty of other examples of authoritarians that run on the same pattern. Second, people without options are going to have to wait it out and go as a refugee if it gets that bad. We are more likely going to be living like Russia rather than nazi germany, but that’s not very good either. |

I work in sales and my husband is a construction manager. Our house is worth around $600K and we have $100K in the bank. No kids. I think a great grandparent was born in Poland? I’m not Jewish. I’m not trying to be poor and destitute in some other country for the rest of my life. |
There are non lucrative visas, digital nomad visa, etc. There is a way out. |
If your great grandparent was born in Poland you qualify for polish citizenship and can live anywhere in the EU, including Ireland if you want to stay in an English speaking country. It's also easier to immigrate to the UK as an EU citizen than an American. You could buy a place in cash and do your same jobs there. |
We are not in great shape because our destination is Europe, which is tetering on the down the drain too, but: 1) college kid is already studying there; 2) HS kid applied for scholarship to finish last two years of HS abroad and may also go abroad for college anyway; 3) spouse who in 25 years never apply for citizenship in my country is doing it now; 4) we are 60 and making plans to move there, spouse is fed so if something happens to his job we may actually speed up plans. We could have gone to low COL in the midwest from where he is from but now that both his parents are dead he no longer wants to even visit. I am terrified that so many people in US do not even know what’s happening, and very concerned about where we are going with US betraying long term allies and cozying up to people like Putin. Trump today saying that Zelenski is a dictator who starter the war and wants to keep it up to get $$$$$ is really beyond the pale. If we need to go down rhe drain, i prefer to do it in my home country. I know people who voted trump will pay a big price and their kids too but they are too stupid to see it. Unfortunately we will pay too. |
I wouldn’t be so sure. I could see that there could an outflow of “refugees” from the US. People that are being discriminated against or oppressed, possibly threatened. |
We were considering a move to Europe but I think Putin will invade within the next five years. Conquering Europe was always part of his plan. |
Give Trump a few more years and you would just have to return to the States as a refugee from Italy, Holland and the Provence region in France. Poland is all that is holding Putin back from taking over Europe. |
