thats what im confused about---seems 4 sucks when you are applying t20--if you report its a great score but not a 5, but if you dont report they may thinks you get less than a 3...i really want guidance on this as well do you report to uva? im assuming yes to vtech? |
Agree. My kid got a 2 on the AP test in the field he wants to go into and we're like--it's just one test on one day, it doesn't mean that much, you can totally study this in college! 2nd parent above is terrible if their kid actually wants to study engineering or physics, has those scores, and they aren't being totally supportive. WTF. |
Oddly enough, my senior’s friends who go to the same public school got either 5s or 3s on all the AP exams they took. Out of eight students, he was the only one who got a 4 and he got 4s on all of them. Curious…
They are all ready for college. |
WTF: this parent is being totally supportive but just not sure how to approach college apps and whther to submit 4s...jeez!!! |
The 5 courses need to be closely aligned to your major, and junior APs like Physics 1 and Precalc are discouraged. For courses with post-AP courses, like calculus and Computer Science, email admissions to ask. They might suggest a retake, or suggest an alternate exam for your higher level courses. Most likely, it won't matter because you'll have 5 more APs in junior/senior year anyway, or you should go ahead and start college a year early. For a few courses like AP Government and AP US History, take more APs in those subjects in later years. (2x English, 2x History, World Language, for example.) |
Have not followed this but if you go to private school that does not have AP I would not think about it. Questions need to be answered in a certain format not taught in non AP taught school. Most kids do not take the tough exams like physics and if they do it is just for practice. Just don’t send scores. Problem solved. |
4 is fine to report! Will it be not enough for admission? Maybe! Is it better than not reporting? No!! Not reporting is equivalent to 1 or 2. What do you think AO thinks when they see "AP course, no test", or "non AP course, no test'. Do you think they are going to assume its equivalent to a 5?! |
Agreed. And I say that as a former college professor. IME, a single three hour assessment has little bearing on college readiness and student performance. This is why we allow multiple tries at the SAT/ACT, provide numerous grading opportunities throughout a HS or college course, etc. A snapshot is certainly useful information but is by no means definitive. Some kids don’t teat well under pressure. I told her, life isn’t an MCQ, it’s an applied knowledge project. That’s how I taught college courses, and where my kid excels. She’ll be just fine in life. |
There is mixed advice on this. My kid had 5s in all STEM related AP tests but 4s in US / world history and language. Waitlist at Cornell and GT with similar SAT and 12 AP, 4.0 etc No one can really tell you what to do here. |
i agree, 4s have to be reported, my kid will suceed if they can move forward and put in effort for sat and junior year courses, we all know the quarterbacks that succeed are the ones who dont fall apart after a not perfect play but how do you relay this to your kid? |
But why is it even a question, its the hardest AP test with the lowest pass rate. You don't have to submit scores, but why would you not submit a 4 on the hardest AP test? Its not one of the top AP tests and only 8 percent of people who take it get a 5. |
where are they going? |
Gender and race are factors |
2024 was the year that standardized testing died. So many leaked test and cheating scandals. This is funny. News cycle a couple years ba about a kid who was the "only" perfect score "ever", on AP Calc AB -- a complete lie. https://www.wlwt.com/article/indiana-teen-only-student-in-world-perfect-score-ap-exam/41392724 |
This is a link to the 2024 AP score distribution if anyone is interested in knowing how many students got 5’s or how many students passed (scores of 3, 4, or 5). https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/about-ap-scores/score-distributions AP Lang only 9% of students got a 5, and only 54% of students passed. BC calc 45% of students got a 5 and 80% passed. Obviously only the top math students are getting to Calc BC so in a way it makes sense. But AP Lang pass rate is interesting. It is mainly juniors I think who take it. AP physics 1 only 8% got a 5, 18% a 4, and 20% a 3. This was the test with the lowest pass rate at only 46%. 83% passed AP Spanish Lang, APUSH this year 72% passed while last year only 47.5% passed. They slightly changed how the grade essays but that mage a big difference. |
