You don’t think Fairfax County types are worse?

It’s the whole state. Annapolis , eastern shore blah blah blah… crabcakes, lacrosse, private schools, country clubs, sailing, blah blah blah … Big Ten
UMD, Hopkins, Navy… even DC and Georgetown are embedded in Md. They own the Potomac River which is kind of infuriating. Just so arrogant.

I think you might be onto something, pp.

In short: Virginians are envious.

They are insecure. And they are frustrated that MD has stereotypes that align with wealth/class while VA has stereotypes that align with redneck conservatism and poverty regardless of the NoVa cost of living.

The bad driver trope is a cover.

Ultimately, it likely comes down to politics.

I’ve never been aware of this stereotype.

MD is the richest state in the U.S.

MD is the richest state in the U.S.

Virginia is the wealthiest state in the US. Maryland is 10th

Did you even read this? It's the opposite; Maryland is the wealthiest state and Virginia is ranked tenth.

Same in my maryland town - so many Va drivers cut through here to get to DC. They tail gate, blow stop signs, speed in residential area, don’t stop at pedestrian crossings, honk unnecessarily, and don’t let others merge in when they can.

People Driving from one state to another probably have long commutes and behave worse is states where they they think people don’t recognize them.

You’re brilliant. I’m positive it is the answer, because every time my husband gets cut off, it’s a Maryland driver. I don’t keep score.

I was convinced this must be the case, that the crazy MD drivers I see in VA just spend a massive amount of time driving and therefore have little patience for traffic. I also assumed they didn't understand that VA police mean business when it comes to speed limits.

Then I had to spend a chunk of time in Waldorf yesterday, driving back and forth across the river twice, and that blew that theory out of the water. The thing is though, compared to seeing them alone in VA, it was actually a little easier to take when it was an entire state of them all driving consistently. Consistently fast and aggressive, but there were no surprises. I knew exactly what they were going to do which made it less stressful in a way.

In the defense of all of the people complaining about VA drivers, I saw just a handful of VA plates all day but two cars who were going twice as slow as everyone else and were tootling along in the left lane, oblivious to the speed of traffic, both had VA plates. (note-I stayed to the right, at one point happily driving behind a huge tanker truck who was only doing 10 mph over the limit because I knew no one was going to cut in front of me with him there.)

It's BECAUSE of the transplants. The mix of transplants, natives, immigrants, transients. It's all of the DC metro area, equally terrible. Case closed.

For alcohol laws, Maryland is ridiculous.
Maryland's flag sucks.
Can't easily park in close-in MD. Parking garage for target? No thank you. But then VA is full of parking lots, driving driving everywhere.

And Bethesda is the hands off winner for awful people that are oblivious to others sharing their space. Not all Bethesdans (I'm one) but you know who they are. (They don't)

You do realize that MD is tiny compared to VA, right? Space is more limited in MD.

I'm from SoCal. We didn't have large parking garages when I was growing up. Just gigantic parking lots because CA land mass is large.

Yes I totally get that. Bethesda, remember? But I spent lots of time in Fairfax VA, CA and AZ, etc., and it's just so so nice to just drive, because you have to drive anyone to go to target or trader joes, park in a big lot, even if you have to walk a bit, and stroll in without faffing about with a parking garage, with a trolley escalator at target. WTF. Two levels? No thanks. And then go back to your car with all your wine and your kids and your starbucks balanced nicely. (ok sarcasm on the last bit). There are parts of Ballston and Mosaic that are annoying like this too, but at least you get your wine.

Imagine! Owning the Potomac River--the nerve of Maryland. Like Randy Newman said, "The South Americans stole our name." Drop the big one on them.

I’m from falls church and live in Md. I dislike the poor zoning in Va that makes for so many strip malls and highways, they s always prioritize the car. Also anywhere near Alexandria smells like a sewer. I think Md plans a bit more strategically for walkability and open spaces and water protection. Va reminds me more of Texas. That said I’m sad to miss out on Va’s great universities, I don’t think Md compares there. And I think hogan kept Md very moderate and hope the new governor doesn’t let the house run away with it all.

I was so elated when I visited Maryland recently, a very packed shopping center around Silver Spring, and the drivers were all so courteous and aware using waving hand signals so we all knew who was going vs. stopping. Hell no, not in VA! If you turn in a VA parking lot, you better be on red alert and pray for best and have good insurance.

And the slow drivers in VA. Holy crap. I get it, you aren't in a hurry. But do you possess a rear view mirror? If you have all day to get somewhere and want to drag as-, and you clearly see I at least wish to drive the speed limit at a minimum and I am tailing you, just get out of the lane or pull over and meditate and relax or whatever you do so I can move on. I do this myself all the time. If someone is in a hurry behind me and riding me, I let them pass, even if it means pulling over a sec. Why don't VA drivers let people pass? Why?

I find it's overwhelmingly white people drivers in Virginia that are terrible. They are most likely transplants.

DP.. lol at the VA bad driver excuses -- "it's not really us.. it's them".

Also, VA drivers don't want to give way because "don't tread on me".

LOL. Actually, don't tread on me folks aren't the ones dragging as-- during morning rush hour thank God.

Two of the biggest cheating whores I know are from MoCO. I hate the state and the drivers are awful and aggressive.

VA, DC and MD are equally horrible drivers. Do everyone a huge favor stay out of the left lane and keep to the right! Teach your children, too.
You do realize that there is still a speed limit in the left lane, right?

I guarantee you're a worse driver than someone who goes above the speed limit. Safe driving is about having control of your vehicle and being able to adjust with the flow... not go a monotonous speed set long ago and think it's fine.

Not one of those cars going 30 miles faster than everyone else in all three lanes and weaving in and out like a video game has the skills they think they have. I hate driving to Maryland because I always see these nuts. Groups of them. It’s not just speeding - it’s reckless weaving in and out way faster than the flow of traffic AND way above the speed limit.

This has been my experience for the decade I have spent driving to Jersey once or twice a month. At least 80% of the time there’s a clueless wonder blocking the left lane, it has Virginia plates. Occasionally New York and Florida but Virginia is the vast majority.
