If you're from Virginia and don't like Maryland

It's BECAUSE of the transplants. The mix of transplants, natives, immigrants, transients. It's all of the DC metro area, equally terrible. Case closed.

For alcohol laws, Maryland is ridiculous.
Maryland's flag sucks.
Can't easily park in close-in MD. Parking garage for target? No thank you. But then VA is full of parking lots, driving driving everywhere.

And Bethesda is the hands off winner for awful people that are oblivious to others sharing their space. Not all Bethesdans (I'm one) but you know who they are. (They don't)

You do realize that MD is tiny compared to VA, right? Space is more limited in MD.

I'm from SoCal. We didn't have large parking garages when I was growing up. Just gigantic parking lots because CA land mass is large.

Yes I totally get that. Bethesda, remember? But I spent lots of time in Fairfax VA, CA and AZ, etc., and it's just so so nice to just drive, because you have to drive anyone to go to target or trader joes, park in a big lot, even if you have to walk a bit, and stroll in without faffing about with a parking garage, with a trolley escalator at target. WTF. Two levels? No thanks. And then go back to your car with all your wine and your kids and your starbucks balanced nicely. (ok sarcasm on the last bit). There are parts of Ballston and Mosaic that are annoying like this too, but at least you get your wine.

Uh ok but if you go to Target up in Germantown you won't have this problem. If you live in a dense area, you get huge parking garages.

I'm from CA, and yea, I was used to huge parking lots, not garages. It wasn't until I moved to MD that I saw a Target with a parking garage.

Back story: mom from was from truly depressed Cumberland, Maryland. I had family in Rockville and PG County (Bowie). Christmas Day would start happily enough then the feeling of doom and dread would set in as we’d have to put out toys down and drive into Maryland for a family Christmas gathering.

I’d usually be carsick en route and arrive to my aunt’s house queasy and sick.

Maryland used to make me physically sick. I still want to bulldoze and power wash great swaths of the state.

-Snobby Virginian.

Funny, I'm from NY but moved to Charlottesville for a job and although the immediate town was nice, I thought what a trashy, rednecky, depressing state. Like two minutes away from Cville and you see Confederate flags everywhere. The obsession with the Confederacy! It was nauseating. And the evangelical Christians reminded me of the Taliban. Between Liberty University in Lynchburg, and Pat Robertson in Va Beach. All those crosses everywhere!

Moved up to Maryland, live in downtown Bethesda and can walk to work, and couldn't be happier to be around reasonable and educated people who live in the 21st century. Maybe when you get that big bulldozer and power washer you should hit Virginia first!

You realize Arlington/Clarendon/Courthouse is virtually identical to Bethesda, right? It’s all blue and an even quicker commute downtown with more single family housing stock walkable to things.

And my kids play sports that take me to sh@those pockets of MD with huge Trump signs and confederate flags. There are rednecks there too. Just not in the urban areas, just like VA.

VA, DC and MD are equally horrible drivers. Do everyone a huge favor stay out of the left lane and keep to the right! Teach your children, too.
You do realize that there is still a speed limit in the left lane, right?
Yes, and if you don't want to drive above the speed limit, you have no business in the left lane. It's for passing only, regardless of speed or speed limit. Get the F over!

You don’t think Fairfax County types are worse?

It’s the whole state. Annapolis , eastern shore blah blah blah… crabcakes, lacrosse, private schools, country clubs, sailing, blah blah blah … Big Ten
UMD, Hopkins, Navy… even DC and Georgetown are embedded in Md. They own the Potomac River which is kind of infuriating. Just so arrogant.

I think you might be onto something, pp.

In short: Virginians are envious.

They are insecure. And they are frustrated that MD has stereotypes that align with wealth/class while VA has stereotypes that align with redneck conservatism and poverty regardless of the NoVa cost of living.

The bad driver trope is a cover.

Ultimately, it likely comes down to politics.

I’ve never been aware of this stereotype.

MD is the richest state in the U.S.

Virginia is the wealthiest state in the US. Maryland is 10th

https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/slideshows/10-wealthiest-states-in-america

Did you even read this? It's the opposite; Maryland is the wealthiest state and Virginia is ranked tenth.

DP.. lol.. I hope the ^PP is not indicative of "educated" people in VA.

^PP like many, just glanced at the article, saw VA first, and thought. OOOH Gotcha! LOL

Hey ^PP, the first state that they show on the pictures that you click through is #10 - VA. The last state that the pix shows is #1 - MD.

Here, since you are reading challenged, here's the list in full without you having to understand info-pix. I hope it's easier for you to read.

OMG too funny.

These Are the 10 Wealthiest States in the U.S.

#1 Maryland
Massachusetts
New Jersey
New Hampshire
California
Hawaii
Washington
Connecticut
Colorado
#10 Virginia

This. Why do MD drivers think highways are video game race tracks? 30 miles over the speed limit, weaving from lane to lane. It’s insane and as common and predictable as the the sun rising.

And what’s with the left turns from the middle lane in front of all the people in the actual left turn lanes?
Left turns from the middle lane are allowed at many intersections and make perfect sense. Learn to drive and pay attention to the turn arrows on the lanes.

This. Every time I’m being ruthlessly tailgated then cut off it nearly always a Maryland bama. The driving style is aggressive.
If you are being tailgated it's because you are slowing people down. There is also, passive aggressive driving. Seriously, no one cares about your right to drive the speed limit when 98% of other drivers do not. Get the F over into the far right lane where you belong and stay there.

Yes! Worst drivers in the US bar none.

According to the insurance institute:

https://insurify.com/insights/states-worst-drivers-2022/

VA #9

MD - not on the list

But sure, don't let statistics and facts get in your way. Your anecdote is so much more accurate.

What a BS list! It is not corrected for LAWS, let alone enforcement.

In Maryland, it is not even a felony to drive 20 mph over the speed limit, but in Virginia, it is.
Your information is wrong. It's definitely a felony in MD and you will get a reckless driving ticket in addition to a speeding ticket. Ask me how I know.

Um. No. And I’m with the pace of traffic minus the aggressive trans am dude driving to Rockville.

Also, whenever I go back to MD, I go insane at how horribly timed the lights are I get serious road rage. Also, why is little falls parkway blocked off?? Plus Md has speed cameras.
Just do what I do and learn where the speed cameras are. It's on my GPS. Blow the lights you don't like if there is no traffic or good reason to stop.

that appears to be the case. They don't like MD because of bad drivers. If that's the only thing, I'd say people are being nitpicky. But whatever floats your boat.

It’s not small things. It’s that they literally treat the highways like a personal race track, weaving in and out of the lanes, changing three lanes at once, going 30 miles faster than everyone else. Sometimes in groups. It’s insane.
Joining those groups is fun. We race each other and it's not just a matter of having a faster car. It's reading traffic and being able to get through it, while at the same time taking advantage of traffic to block in your fellow aggressive driver who is trying to pass you. Please, get to the right and then don't change lanes. Otherwise you slow drivers make things very dangerous for the rest of us. If you often see people tailgating you, flashing their brights, or a strong of people passing you on the right, you are not a good driver and need to learn to get over.

Anonymous wrote:The thing about MD drivers, is that they lack the ability to discern adjusting with the flow, and seem to drive in extremes. Either like a maniac weaving in/out of lanes, or driving slow in the left lane. Don't signal at all... or leave your signal on for 3 miles. Don't turn on headlines in the rain/dark, or drive with your highbeams on.

A good driver is able to adjust to the situation accordingly. There are so, so, sooooo many MD drivers who lack this critical yet simple ability.
We don't signal for two reasons. Signalling to change lanes in MD is not a law and, if I signal my intentions, I get blocked in. You don't need me to signal if I'm going faster than you when changing lanes. Signaling is for turning, not highway driving.

I guarantee you're a worse driver than someone who goes above the speed limit. Safe driving is about having control of your vehicle and being able to adjust with the flow... not go a monotonous speed set long ago and think it's fine.

Not one of those cars going 30 miles faster than everyone else in all three lanes and weaving in and out like a video game has the skills they think they have. I hate driving to Maryland because I always see these nuts. Groups of them. It’s not just speeding - it’s reckless weaving in and out way faster than the flow of traffic AND way above the speed limit.
It doesn't take as much skill as you think. I can drive 30 over while brushing and flossing my teeth, relieving myself into a Gatoraid bottle, fixing my hair, changing clothes, adjusting the radio and browsing my phone. I do it nearly every day.

No one outside of this region would guess that Maryland is first, though. Most people in the rest of the country don’t think about VA or MD much at all.

Omg. Not unless it’s designated for turns. No.
