Maryland drivers are the worst. No matter where I am on 95, no matter the state I’m in, there is a reckless Maryland driver cutting people off and playing frogger.

In short: Virginians are envious.

They are insecure. And they are frustrated that MD has stereotypes that align with wealth/class while VA has stereotypes that align with redneck conservatism and poverty regardless of the NoVa cost of living.

The bad driver trope is a cover.

Ultimately, it likely comes down to politics.

I grew up in Fairfax County and always had the impression that Maryland was kind of trashy, but I don’t know where it came from.
