Jesus.

Does a six year old have the ability to fully understand what he did? WTH.

No, but it means he didn’t just bring a gun from home to show his friends and accidentally discharged it. He brought a gun to school to shoot it.

How did he know how?? Disgusting.

Um, screen time. They learned an awful lot about sex and violence home alone during lockdowns.

Lockdown? My kindergarteners tell me all about the crap they watch online every day.

The kid in question was transferred from another school last year for supposedly strangling his teacher (in kindergarten). Since the first day of school he has had issues where hes been allowed to run rampent in the school. It got to the point where he was in trouble so often that his mom would have to walk him to the room each morning.
The day it happened the principal and them were notified that he had brought a gun to school numerous times and rumors spread about the same. They didnt do a thing about it. They said it was likely just a toy. No search, no pulling him out, nothing.
After the shooting happened a staff member called the cops because one of the other students recognized it as a gun shot. The lockdown didnt happen until well after the call had been placed. During the lockdown there wasnt a single message sent to all staff via email or text, most were left stranded in their rooms hiding with the kids for 45+ min. Its not clear to me how it happened but another member of staff was able to prevent the kid from doing anything further.
During the debriefing after no information was given about the teacher's condition or exacts about the situation. The school board and all the admins did show up for the photo op and show of support tho.
The teacher is doing decently enough for everything considered and the investigation is underway.
Huge shoutout to the Newport News PD, they showed up and responded in what seemed like record time and with everyone in the department (as well as a few other agencies).
I can verify my identity if need be but I am the spouse of an employee that was there. This was posted on a throwaway account on a vpn to prevent getting doxxed or anything from the district or anyone else.

I can’t believe a 6 year old did this. I know he did- it’s just so incredible. This kid needs to be in a mental hospital. I hope the gun owners are charged.

It’s a bad town?

In many areas, yes, very. The subsidized housing areas have substantial violent crime and that school district has had gun issues over the last year. What happens at home spills over into the schools, just like it would anywhere else.

I also remember in the Michael Vick 30 by 30 documentary I watched it going into great detail about the crime, poverty and violence in Newport News and how he desperately wanted to get out and make a better life but his old friends pulled him back in over and over. It was like the wild Wild West so it had the nickname Newport Nam. It is not a sleepy, quiet town.

They are still suppressing how he got the gun

I’m not sure why you’d assume it’s “suppressing” when they’re probably still investigating. Do you really think the guilty party is going to volunteer that info promptly?

Exactly. It’s an ongoing, active criminal investigation. Very possible adults who made weapon accessible to child will be charged.

I'm going to take a wild guess here and speculate he got it at home.

Even if they’re mentally ill?

Yes. The fact that someone is mentally ill does not excuse your liability if that person gets ahold of one of your guns.

You know, every time stuff like this happens I’m reminded that reagan got rid of federal mental institutions.

I get it- they were awful.

But honestly- do we want to sacrifice the general public for one person?

I’m not so sure anymore.

No. Those federal institutions were supposed to be replaced with supportive community based group homes and other wraparound services for people who were suffering with intractable mental health conditions. That didn't happen. Expecting families, or worse, people with no families and severe, debilitating mental illness, to basically fend for themselves and figure out how to navigate a complex, severely underfunded network of patchy resources is ridiculous. Even if you have money and understand how to navigate the system, getting a bed in a long term facility is nearly impossible. Ask anyone who works in an emergency room and they can tell you all kinds of stories. It was never going to work. But wow, it sure did save a lot of taxpayer money in the short term!!

That would be my first assumption. Maybe he bought it somewhere but c'mon, the kid is still only 6. Does he even have any money?

He got it at home - from someone. Maybe he stole it from a locked gun safe, maybe he picked it up from a table, maybe it was given to him as a gift.

How to fire a handgun??

Some people will take any opportunity to blame the lockdowns. It's not rational.

I had a 5 year old threaten to “f***ing k*** me in 2018, he told his pre-k teacher he’d r@*e her. This was 2018. Media and abusive homes have existed for years

This. In 2006, I read the file of a transferred 7th grader. He was 13 then. Back when he was in K, he kicked a pregnant teacher in the belly and told her that he hoped her baby died. That had nothing to do with virtual school or even the internet.

Well, yeah. But if it’s a household with a lot of people coming and going, there’s still some investigating to do. I’m guessing the responsible party didn’t use Mabel’s Labels.

Nothing in the constitution to say that there can’t be really harsh consequences when someone’s weapons are used in a crime.

I think that’s the first step towards gun control.
too bad Dems are lowering penalties for gun crimes and often drop charges all together

too bad Rs want to allow anyone to carry a gun

No. "Rs" don't want felons to carry a gun. "Ds" are apparently just fine with it.

Then why did Rs fight Obama on preventing people with mental illness from getting guns?

Also, the Constitution doesn't say anything about felons not being able to buy guns. Since it explicitly states that everyone has a right to bear arms, why shouldn't a felon carry a gun? That 2A rights that you Rs support.

Ds and mental health advocates fought it too. No one wants a mental health reporting requirement or some database of who has had a mental health problem
