Teacher shot at Newport News elementary school

Anonymous
I can't even. And the one school official saying this wasn't a situation where a shooter was walking around the building! This student shot his teacher, allegedly saying before hand he was going to shoot her. THIS is the exact reason I've been lobbying for more support in our K and 1st grade rooms with these students who are out of control in my district. Assuming the teacher survives, I hope she sues her district into oblivion.

Jesus.

Does a six year old have the ability to fully understand what he did? WTH.

No, but it means he didn’t just bring a gun from home to show his friends and accidentally discharged it. He brought a gun to school to shoot it.

How did he know how?? Disgusting.

Um, screen time. They learned an awful lot about sex and violence home alone during lockdowns.

I dont think it's just screen time. If he grew up with guns in the home he likes knows what they do. We have no guns but my kids play nerf guns or laser tag. They are in boy scouts and shot BB guns. We have talked to them about how dangerous guns ans are and how they could hurt people or kill them. I am sure my kids would know how to use a gun. They are pretty self explanatory.

What do you mean? The parents. The 6 year old was able to access a gun, which means his family are idiot gun owners that don’t secure their firearms. These are the kind of people that worship guns and the second amendment and treat their weapons like toys to collect and play with. They teach their children how to shoot. They pose toddlers with semi-automatic rifles for cute photo ops. Our country is filled with these nuts.

Some people will take any opportunity to blame the lockdowns. It's not rational.

The kids are full of rage - younger and younger.

And for good reason, but it doesn't justify this.

This, and he knew what the gun would do. He deliberately wanted to harm the teacher.

There is NO reason to be this full of rage at any age, let alone 6.

And yes likely heard an adult in his household say (in jest or seriously) that they'll shoot someone who crossed them, maybe even a teacher.

I had a 5 year old threaten to “f***ing k*** me in 2018, he told his pre-k teacher he’d r@*e her. This was 2018. Media and abusive homes have existed for years

I don't know. What do you do with a 6 year old who shot someone??

Probably foster care and intensive psych services. His parents are almost certainly to blame because they’d likely where he got the gun. 6 is too young to have real mens rea for a crime like this.

He told the class he was going to shoot her, that's what is being reported. He planned this in advance.

That’s awful. Last year, there was a kid in my kid’s second grade class who had a lot of problems and at least once threatened to kill the teacher.

In LCPS a kid drew a threatening picture of my neighbors kid (dying) with and the school did nothing bc it was a 3rd grader. Harmless they said.

What would you have them do? Serious question.

School is only 26% white so not very diverse.

Says a privileged person who always has food and shelter, never experienced abuse, has never been raped as a small child . . . There are plenty of kids who are failed by adults and the system.

Who would she sue? The family likely has no resources and the school will be protected by applicable workers’ compensation laws. They’ll accept the claim and she’ll get her wage loss and medicals covered at the statutory rates.
