Stop being immature. Obviously it’s a good thing if felons aren’t walking around with firearms. Stop implying that it isn’t. Who the hell cares about the details and the politics. Stop making this political. We have a crisis in this country. There are literally millions and millions of gun owners out there who never hurt anyone with their guns and never would because they’re secured properly. Then there are the criminals who use their guns to commit crimes, and the idiots who make their guns available for other people to use unlawfully. We need to deal with the second problem, not the first non-problem. Gun ownership isn’t our enemy here. Republicans aren’t our enemy. Criminals are. Criminals and idiots. Let’s deal with them. |
virtually everyone has mental illness. |
+1. I work in a public elementary school and definitely can picture a few students that fit this description and nothing would shock me about anything they did. |
This is so disturbing ![]() |
if schools used to move around rapist teachers , move around rapist students , why do you think they’d do anything about a potentially violent 6 year old? |
NP but I want to say for the record that the children I have know like this come from all sorts of backgrounds-racially and socioeconomically. The scariest ones had combative parents in denial. |
Time for all of the politicians to come in with all their crocodile tears. Like there is no solution to this problem. At the very least, can’t we make prospective gun owners take a class? |
The law was only for specific mental illnesses |
Maybe time to finally hold perps accountable for their crimes? |
44% black, 26% white, 16% Hispanic IS diverse. That still leaves 14% unaccounted for-likely Asian and multiracial. Do you only count it as diversity when white is the majority?? |
Will the parents of the classmates who witnessed this sue the school system for not taking previous incidents seriously? |
Wasn't Columbine in a really "nice" suburb? And Sandy Hook? There is no safe school. |
I hope so. I hope every family and every staff member sues the district. I'd do it for the inevitable PTSD. I'm unsure, to be honest, how they expect staff or students to return. Teachers, here's a piece of advice for you if you haven't already been doing this. When you have a student with serious behavioral or emotional issues, keep records of your communications with administration and the "team" (usually made up of the sped teacher, the psych, the social worker, etc) who help to determine what supports a child gets. Keep records of every email. Follow up every verbal communication with a "recap" email stating what was said. Keep track of every time some staff or admin on "the team" tells you how to handle situations. Keep track of what they do and do not do. Keep track of what parents say and do, too. You may need it in court some day. But most of all, I encourage every single staff member to FIGHT for what you and your students need. I have made myself absolutely obnoxious these past few years on behalf of my students and my colleagues. I'm an older teacher and maybe I just don't care anymore what admins think. We teachers have to start demanding 1:1 aides for some of these kids while we wait for evals to happen. Go to your union (if you have one). Band together as a grade level and go to your superintendent. Go to board meetings and speak up. Complain until they give you what you need just to make you go away. Best of all, get on your contract negotiations team if you can and fight for help in your contract. Go on strike if they won't help. Organize. Go to the state board of ed and complain. Maybe we teachers need to hire legal representation to amend the IDEA. I don't know, but if we keep doing what we've always done (complaining over drinks, crying in our cars on the way to school, taking a lot of sick days just to get through the year, etc) nothing will change. |
Winsome Sears Tweeted the following:
“We pray for the teacher who was shot in Newport News. How has life become so devalued? What has happened to us as a society that a six year-old wants to harm their teacher? We have lost our moral compass, and it's affecting our children.” How dare she ask those questions. Does she not look in the mirror?
