You know, every time stuff like this happens I’m reminded that reagan got rid of federal mental institutions.

I get it- they were awful.

No. Those federal institutions were supposed to be replaced with supportive community based group homes and other wraparound services for people who were suffering with intractable mental health conditions. That didn't happen. Expecting families, or worse, people with no families and severe, debilitating mental illness, to basically fend for themselves and figure out how to navigate a complex, severely underfunded network of patchy resources is ridiculous. Even if you have money and understand how to navigate the system, getting a bed in a long term facility is nearly impossible. Ask anyone who works in an emergency room and they can tell you all kinds of stories. It was never going to work. But wow, it sure did save a lot of taxpayer money in the short term!! [/quote]
