Is this a joke/parody of the current housing market?

So at the risk of getting myself doxxed, I know the neighbors and have intel on the whole situation. The old man who lived there has been having some health issues for a while and was finally moved to hospice care a few days ago. His adult children aren’t in a position to care for the house so they want to sell it ASAP. The “tenant” in the basement is a housekeeper who has been taking care of the old man for a few years. She, her young daughter and their little dog live rent free and the old man doesn’t want them evicted. They’re not bad people or drug dealers or anything like that.
As of yesterday, the house already has three all cash offers (presumably from investors looking to tear down/rebuild). It’s expected to go under contract in the next couple of weeks.

OP here. I can’t believe so many places have picked up this story and that there are almost 100k views on Redfin now. I guess even notoriety is good if it drives traffic. That’s a sad situation and a bit of a moral dilemma. What if the kids had abandoned the old man and the housekeeper was the only one caring for him with the promise that she could stay? I think the kids should at least pay her something for taking care of their father and moving out.

I actually think this is the situation. The children don’t want to deal and don’t have any money. They should give her some of the proceeds to put a deposit down on a new place. The kids sound awful.

I get the appeal of this story, but it's a sad story. Sounds like at least an inspiration for a good movie, if not a full-on documentary a la Grey Gardens.

So, not a squatter. What a sad situation. Maybe with all of the media attention someone can help them find housing.

The house is now pending.

In what way do they sound "awful"? In the quote below from earlier in the thread, It sounds like someone who has led the owner to believe they are a housekeeper has basically invited herself along with her child and a dog to move in rent free. The kids want to sell the house, they aren't obligated to keep or help out the "housekeeper", who seems to leave trash all over the place.

There's nothing indicating the kids have abandoned the father, they just don't want to carry the house!

Tenant is not a family member. She weasled her way in on the premise of helping the owner. I assumed this was the case, this happens a lot.

The tenant has a young kid and no lease, so eviction is going to be interesting. Tenant also apparently has lots of late-night visitors who come and go. So she's a scam artist it sounds like.

And in Washingtonian https://www.washingtonian.com/2022/04/12/this-800k-house-in-fairfax-will-go-quickly-it-comes-with-a-person-in-the-basement/?fbclid=IwAR3vjpl0yTDJPj2qm-sfuO5jrG_c-0u-BygQkMAyFEydna41O_p4QJ8xvro

Washingtonian article says they have one bid and are expecting more.

Of course the realtor says this...

It’s pending now. So what was your point?

Now pending? Investor decided it was worth it

In Virginia the squatter or housekeeper becomes a month to month tenant and the owner can take actions to evict them. I believe you need 30 days notice of an eviction so you can pretty much give yourself 2 months to get them out if things run smoothly.

That being said my neighborhood crazy lady where I live in NOVA hasn't paid her mortgage in years and the bank has been trying to foreclose on her house as long as I can remember. Her house is also for sale, listed on zillow/redfin, for about $850,000 and showings are NOT permitted. You can only do a drive by according to the listing. So inside sight unseen to buy that dump. I am waiting for it to also show up on zillowgonewild like this one did.

The state of the house indicates that the woman isn't a true housekeeper AND that the adult children of the owner have abandoned the father. I would never ever let my senior parents live in that squalor.

You have no idea about their family situation- neither do I. It is not appropriate to harshly judge and speculate about their life when you know nothing.

OK, hope you're saving up some of that scolding for a lot of other posts on this thread, and this website. We all see the pictures.

PP, it’s not scolding. Do you read everything with a negative attitude? We all see the photos and still don’t rush to judge.
